 | | Paris, October 23 {No.97-182} - Yasser Arafat, President of the Palestinian Authority this evening addressed UNESCO’s General Conference, the Organisation’s supreme ruling body, stressing the importance of its agenda "because it includes humanity’s greatest concern, the right to peace and our responsibility towards future generations." |
 | | He further demanded that the Palestinian Authority be allowed to re-open its airport, complete work on building a harbour, and that the Israeli authorities release all Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. |
 | | The President of the General Conference, Eduardo Portella, welcomed Mr Arafat and praised "his engagement on the side of peace." The Chairman of UNESCO’s Executive Board, Nouréini Tidjani-Serpos also welcomed Mr Arafat, declaring: "UNESCO is a temple for peace and all those who seek peace are welcome to it." |
