Their presidential ticket, John Hospers and Theodora Nathan, earned fewer than 3,000 votes, but received the first and only electoral college vote for a Libertarian ticket, from Roger MacBride of Virginia, who was pledged to Richard Nixon.

 CNN.com - The inevitable vice presidential nominee - Dec. 2, 2003
In micro-politics, the nominee focuses on a major state or constituency in naming a number two, such as a governor who could "deliver" his battleground home state.
The macro approach would be to choose for vice president an individual who helps politically beyond a home state and the selection of whom sends a positive message about the presidential nominee, himself.
If the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004 dares to go macro, then his running mate could be the one public man who has shown the guts, the brains and the will to take on the Class War Criminals who have fleeced millions of Mom and Pop investors.

In the bad old days, national party conventions were held so that representatives of state party organizations could meet, choose the party's nominee, choose the national party officers and central committee and work out the party's platform.
All of these matters often remained quite unsettled until deals were struck at the convention, usually in the proverbial "smoke-filled back room." The whole process was much less open to the public even 30 or 40 years ago than it is today.
Today, the presidential nominee is always chosen by the primary system before the convention, and the convention merely ratifies the party leadership and platform recommended by the nominee's organization.
