XVIII Corps was born at the Presidio of Monterey on 10 October 1943 by the redesignation of the II Armored Corps headquartered there.
Monterey had its own “colored” USO and (lest you think that awareness of fl history was a new thing) the week beginning 8 February 1943 was designated “Negro1 History Week.” The first contingent of German prisoners-of- war arrived in March 1943.
Other notable events in the Monterey area during the rest of the war included the opening of the Stilwell Hall enlisted club on 24 September 1943 and the movement of the newly reactivated Fourth Army Headquarters to the Presidio of Monterey from San Jose.

The Monterey presidio was one of four presidios and 21 missions established by Spain in California.
In 1940, the Presidio became the temporary headquarters of the III Corps, and served as a reception center until 1944.
Declared inactive in late 1944, the Presidio was reopened in 1945 and served as a Civil Affairs Staging and Holding Area (CASA) for civil affairs soldiers preparing for the occupation of Japan.

The Presidio of Monterey was founded on June 3, 1770, by Fray Junípero Serra, Gaspar de Portolá, Fray Juan Crespi, Lt. Pedro Fages, six Catalonian Volunteers, four cuera soldiers, and men from the ship San Antonio.
At the presidio, building operations were probably conducted for most of the the winter and spring, as on June 20, 1771 a communication from Fages to the viceroy implies that everything was complete except for the new church, which was to replace the original brush structure.
The cannon from the presidio were moved to this location, ending the use of the presidio as a fort.
