  Presley O'Bannon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Presley Neville O’Bannon (1784 – 12 September 1850) was an officer in the United States Marine Corps, famous for his exploits in the First Barbary War.
Born in Fauquier County, Virginia, O'Bannon entered the Marine Corps 18 January 1801.
During the combined operations with the U.S. Navy, he led the successful attack in the Battle of Derna 27 April 1805, giving the Marine Corps Hymn its immortal “to the shores of Tripoli”.

O’Bannon boldly attacked the Japanese battleship Hiei, closing so near that the battleship could not depress her guns far enough to fire on the gallant destroyer.
O’Bannon’s gunfire, in combination with the attacks of the rest of the force, damaged Hiei so badly that she was a sitting duck for the air attack which sank her next day.
O’Bannon was close on Chevalier’s stern when the latter was struck, and the most radical maneuvers could not keep her from swinging into her sister’s side.

Presley Neville O'Bannon was born on 1776, in Fauquier County, Virginia.
While serving as the Marine Officer on the later vessel, he was selected for a mission that later was commemorated in the colors of the Marine Corps and recorded in the Marine Hymn in the words "to the shores of Tripoli".
Under a bombardment provided by these ships, Lt. O'Bannon led his force on March 27th 1805 through a shower of musketry and stormed the principal edifices, routing the enemy in such haste that their guns were left loaded and primed.

O’Bannon sailed out of San Diego for exercises and training maneuvers along the coast of California and in Hawaiian waters throughout her career.
In the spring of 1920 she conducted experiments with torpedoes, then was in reserve commission from June to November, when she resumed her training schedule.

We received word that the O'Bannon was selected to escort the carrier Tarawa, CVA 40, to Australia on a good will tour April 17, 1954 Entered Sasebo Japan in preparation for the long cruise across the Equator.
Incidently the O'Bannon was the first WW II American ship to moore in Perth, Australia since the war.
One of the first things I learned was that O'Bannon had returned in May of the same year ('60) from Westpac cruise/Coral Sea celebration.
