 Presque Isle Lighthouses
Presque Isle is actually a sand spit peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie from Erie, PA. The name is French for "almost an island." In fact, storms have separated the sand spit from the mainland four times since 1819.
A 1.5 mile road of sand and dirt was constructed to connect the lighthouse with a boathouse in Misery Bay, on the south side of Presque Isle.
Perry's vessels were built in Presque Isle Bay and stationed in Misery Bay during the winter of 1813-1814.

 Seeing The Light - New Presque Isle Lighthouse
With the illumination of the new light rendering the old 1840 station at which he had served for the past ten years obsolete, Patrick Garrity was transferred as Keeper of the New Presque Isle Light, and loading his family and their personal belongings onto a wagon for the two-mile trip to the new light.
In poor structural condition, and no longer deemed a necessity to maritime interests, both the fog signal building and oil storage shed were demolished during the 1950's, and a large 24 foot by 65 foot concrete block garage was constructed for the vehicles of the rotating group of seamen assigned to the station.
The structures were eventually leased to Presque Isle Park in the 1970's to serve as a public par and maritime museum.

That fall, Lieutenant James T. Homans was dispatched to select sites for the lighthouse at Presque Isle, along with sites for other new lights appropriated for Point-aux-Barques, South Manitou island, New Buffalo and Grassy Island at the foot of Green Bay.
