[on Presque Rien avec Filles] In these paradoxical landscapes, a photographer or a composer is concealed, the young women are there, having a sort of picnic/dejeuner sur l’herbe and without knowing, they give him a view of their closeness.
Luc Ferrari's series of three Presque Rien ('almost nothing') pieces are notable for their apparent lack of intervention in sonic processing and editing terms.
Presque Rien no. 3 conceals many things, among them the presence of the composer (who is an unidentified 'authorial voice' that crops up in the sounds of footsteps, movement and occasional words).

 PULSE FIELD Playlist
Smugly qualified by Ferrari as a "poor man's concrete music," "Presque Rien" is a brilliant piece of musique concrete that reflects the turbulent psychological landscape of Paris in the late '60s and early '70s.
Yet as soon as the "Presque Rien" suites begin, the politically charged references of grim military waltzes, impassioned revolutionary speeches, and whirling factory sounds are done away with, in favor of subtle collages of natural sounds.
Upon superficial listens, "Presque Rien" appears somewhat simple; however, do yourself the favor by listening to this attentively (preferably on headphones) to capture the subtle theatrics of Ferrari's composition.

I wanted to be a radical as possible, and take it to the limit in terms of using natural sound, by not including any artificial, sophisticated sound at all.
Instrumental sounds are added too--putting the walker inside the recording process and recognizing him as a person, led me to think: "There are these natural sounds, and I'm going to make sounds too, incorporate a symbolic transcription of what comes into my head and then intervene as composer." So I became a kind of director.
The ‘Presque Rien’s are a lot more realistic.

Molars: There was a lot of talk about dinosaurs and illiteracy
As Andy Beta pointed out in his review of the EP on P-Fork, Luc Ferrari's "Presque Rien" had mapped the same sort of landscapes, 30 years prior.
And it's this sound that Ferrari uses almost like a florist would use floral foam, as he zooms in on other discrete sonic objects and arranges them particularly, gracefully, over the length of the entire 'Promenade'.
You can find a bunch of Ferrari's releases right over here, but if you're interested in owning a copy of "Presque Rien" on CD, it's going to be a little bit more difficult (check out the original vinyl available for a mere $280) to obtain.

With the sad passing of the Big Boys' singer Randy "Biscuit" Turner on August 18th, a scant week after my posting of some of their classic punk tuneage, I began to fret about a Moistworks curse.
Not everything he did was so tranquil: see the tense orchestrated minimalism of "Tautologos 3," the sudden stabs of "Presque Rien No.2," and the naughty electronics of sapphic whispers and tingling drones of "Danses Organiques."

 * Dusted Reviews - Akchoté / Auzet / Ferrari *
In the past couple of years, there has been a full-scale Ferrari revival thanks to several years of O’Rourke and Grubbs citing Presque Rien each time an interviewer would senselessly ask “What’s your favorite album?” knowing full-and-well that the answers would be always Presque Rien and Van Dyke Parks’ Song Cycle.
More recently, a compilation of Ferrari’s early work has appeared on EMF label, showing how severe the musique concrete influence was on Ferrari before he shook it with Presque Rien but also, and more pertinent to the newest record, including a number of experiments with acoustic instruments.
Yet both the conceptual rigor of Tautologos and the sensualism of Presque Rien’s hypnotic and vivid reductions seem to be absent in his later work.

It is as if Ferrari set up an aesthestic antithesis between the tense, urban sounds on "Music Promenade" and the suposedly placid sounds of nature on the rest of the album, all the while maintaining a firm grip on a psychoanalysis upon the landscape.
Like Robert Ashley's ultra creepy "Purposeful Lady Slow Afternoon," Ferrari intertwines fragments of various whispered narratives with the steady buzzings of choral cicadas, as if each narration were that of a voyeur spying upon the intimacy of nature.

 PostClassic:
I can’t say I ever quite understood Ferrari’s music - in fact, that was what was so damned interesting about the three of them, whereas what Boulez, Stockhausen, and Nono were doing was so obvious, so minutely explained and explainable.
The signal piece for Ferrari was, of course, Presque Rien No. 1, a 1969 piece of musique concrète of which I find this decription at the Other Minds website:
By 1970 he had completed Presque Rien No. 1, a kind of musical photography, in which unassuming ambient sounds of a small village in Yugoslavia, recorded throughout a long day, are telescoped by means of seamless dissolves into a 21-minute narrative in which no apparent “musical” sounds are included.

 comeundone
This is a well-presented debut film for writer/director Sébastien Lifshitz.
The French film's title, Presque Rien, means 'almost nothing.' While starting the story from the conclusion Lifshitz daringly experiments with fast-forwards and flashbacks, as the film shoots out of linear order for the span of a year and a half.
It is at times confusing to follow the events, but this risky technique of filmmaking makes you more alert to the character study and allows you time to think for yourself what is ailing the young hero rather than being forced-fed what it means.
