Press Gang was a British children's television show (running from 1989 to 1993) based around the activities of a "children's newspaper" initially begun as a school project but in later series depicted as a commercial venture.
A comedy/drama, the show was notable for the high quality and sophistication of the writing, as well as the chemistry between the two lead actors, Julia Sawalha who played the tough-as-nails editor Lynda Day, and Dexter Fletcher, playing a wise-cracking American reporter.

 Broadside. The Press Gang
The word 'press' itself was a corruption, in regular use at the end of the Eighteenth Century, of the word prest.
The scope for corruption was large, many men would bribe their way out of the gangs clutches, for a prosperous man a £10 bribe to the press gang was a small price to pay for his continued liberty.
The press was not new at the time of the Napoleonic wars, it had been in existance in one form or another for centuries, and slowly certain rules had evolved about the taking of men for service at sea.

Press Gang was and is a great show, no question.
But the fact is, it was made to be a children's show, and it gave up on that at the beginning of the third season, when the Junior Gazette went commercial.
Press Gang is really fabulous to the end - but that said, season 2 is still the best ensemble piece.

 The Press Gang - Printmaking
The press I use at home is a very standard roller press which passes the inked plate and paper between two large cylindrical drums.
The Press Gang’s roller image is from a lino print about eight inches square although it has been scanned and heavily manipulated in the computer before becoming our logo.
Because it has not been etched, scratched or set out with glue it cannot be repeated, although it is sometimes possible to put the plate through the press a second time and produce faint version of the first print from the residual ink on the plate.

Press warrants, identical in every respect save one with the historic warrant of 1216, continued to emanate from the Crown long after King John had gone to his account, and, what is more to the point, to emanate unchallenged.
Sham gangs and make-believe press-masters abounded, thriving exceedingly upon the fears and credulity of the people until capture put a term to their activities and sent them to the pillory, the prison or the fleet they pretended to cater for.
Pressed there in that year on his return from the West Indies, he was discharged as a person of alien birth; but having immediately afterwards committed the indiscretion of taking a Bristol woman to wife, he was again pressed, this time within three weeks of his wedding-day, and kept by express order of Admiralty.

While a press corps that openly challenges the political elite would be a positive development, readers and viewers should question why reporters who are demonstrably angry and are covering this story aggressively have been so rarely moved by other events.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a more aggressive press corps seems to have caught the White House public relations team off-balance-- a situation the White House has not had to face very often in the last five years.
Speaking of CNN, it can't be coincidental that, of all the news networks to have seen ratings jump during the Katrina coverage, it enjoyed the biggest leap, according to the Pew Research Center for People and the Press.
