WASHINGTON (AP) - Ari Fleischer's first assignment as incoming White House press secretary was to announce his own appointment on Thursday, and to say he wouldn't answer any questions about it.
It was Fleischer's idea to serve iced tea to reporters in March to make fun of Vice President Al Gore's explanation that he missed the bulk of a White House meeting on campaign fund-raising because he was making trips to the restroom after drinking iced tea.
Fleischer also served as press secretary for Senior Pete Dominici from 1989 until 1994 and then spent five years as spokesman for the House Ways and Means Committee dealing with issues relating to taxes, social security, welfare and international trade.
