Conversely, the press rely on such conferences as a means for assuring that the politician is held accountable for his or her policies and actions.
Although he did not hold formal press conferences in their contemporary sense, he realized that the media could be used to shape public opinion and established close relationships with journalists.

The press has latched onto what is to me a promising new line of attack: Bush doesn't admit mistakes.
His series of stale platitudes and canned responses were exactly the words she used on Meet the Press and exactly the same used by Condi in her testimony, but his stammering presentation should've been a little slicker if we're to believe he actually has it memorized for next performance.
The biggest problem for the pundits and commentators after the press conference is that they couldn't truly say what their impressions were about Bush because it would have had to have been completely disrepectful of the imperial office of the President.
