pressure relief valve, axelson relief valves
An Axelson pilot operated pressure relief valve is designed to be used on oil and gas production systems, compressor stations, gas transmission (pipeline) facilities, storage systems and in all gas processing plants; whenever there is a need to exhaust the overpressure volume of gas, vapor and/or liquid.
When the relief valve is closed, system pressure is pushing upwards against the piston seat seal on an area equal to the inside diameter of the seat.
When the predetermined blowdown pressure is reached (either fixed or adjustable), the pilot shuts-off the exhaust and re-opens flow of system pressure to the top of the piston effectively closing the relief valve.

 Water Heater (Temperature/Pressure Relief Valve)
The purpose of the TPR valve is to provide an important safety mechanism that allows for the immediate discharge of excess temperature and pressure that builds up inside the tank as the water is heated.
This is a common defect that is strictly prohibited because smaller discharge pipes restrict the flow of the pressurized water released by the valve.
When you consider that the TPR valve discharges at 150 psi, which is five times greater than the force of your garden hose, the scalding water can strike the bottom of the shallow pan and spray out in all directions.

How to Select a Pressure Relief Valve
An example of this type of relief valve, made of metal, is found on hot water heaters to protect them from damage should steam form inside the heater and cause over-pressurization.
The other common type of relief valve, and the one made by Hayward in PVC plastic, gradually diverts the flow out of the discharge port as the pressure is relieved.
A Hayward plastic relief valve is to be installed in the system to prevent the pump from having to operate against a closed system should a valve downstream from the pump be closed.

 Pressure Washer Parts Online
Pressure relief vavles are usually installed on the high pressure side of a pump and set 300-400 PSI above the unloader setting, protecting against unloader failure.
The thermal relief valve is used to protect the pump from overheating (pump water seals damage).
Once the thermal relief valve rated temperature is exceeded, circulating water is discharged and new cooler water from the water inlet is allowed in.

 Pressure Relief Valve FAQ
Valves with "O" ring seats also offer the benefit of simpler maintenance by eliminating the necessity of lapping the seat and disc as replacement of the "O" ring and a light cleaning of the nozzle may be all that is necessary.
Valves with "O" ring seats do have limitations based on the temperature range of the elastomer that is selected and the users' ability to find a compound that is compatible with the service fluid.
Pilot operated valves such as the 3800 series are normally used where maximum seat tightness is required and where the operating pressure is close to set pressure.

Low pressure safety relief valve - Patent 4425938
Inlet pressure is the pressure observed at the inlet of the safety relief valve 12.
Thus, when the valve stem pulls upwardly to disengage the valve element 92, the valve element 92 is inevitably forced upwardly, and positive engagement between the valve stem 57 and the valve element 92 is maintained.
In this example, the dome pressure is 925 psi and this pressure is applied to the larger area of the piston 18 of the safety relief valve 12.

 pressure relief valve maintenance
This might go on for years without testing the valve and yet the one time in many that the relief valve is called upon to function, corrosion or internal malfunction will not permit the valve to open and a dangerous overpressure occurs.
Testing of almost any valve can be performed in the field by use of nitrogen or a high-pressure connection on upstream side of meter station and a long high-pressure hose to the relief valve.
If a block valve is not installed, to ascertain if the relief will function, even though the pressure setting cannot be determined, lift the lever, or in the case of U. Industries Relief Valve, lift the stem on the relief control.

 Relief Valve Set Pressure
The certified capacity which determines adequacy of design of a relief valve (which is the 'device' I assume you are referring to since the capacity of a stand alone rupture disk is different) is based on the criteria described in ASME Section VIII, Divison 1, Paragraph UG-131, not Paragraph UG-125.
For your information, the stamped capacity for relief valves in vapor/gas service is usually given in terms of SCFM of air at set pressure plus 10% overpressure and 60 degress F. Valves in steam service are stamped in terms of pounds per hour of steam at set pressure plus 10% overpressure at the saturation temperature.
I see that the code states that "the valve must have the capacity to relieve the load*" and that "the official rated capacity is that which is stamped*" but I don't see where it says that the valve must be able to relieve the load at the official rated capacity.

 Back Pressure Relief Valves
Back Pressure Relief Valves are generally used for controlling the discharge pressure (back pressure) of positive displacement pumps.
Removing the actuator (housing assembly) from the valve body exposes all the working parts that are contacted by the liquid being pumped.
Once all residual pressure is bled off, the valve can be opened for service by simply removing the air connection at the center of the top cap, grabbing the housing, and unscrewing the actuator from the body.

When water pressure inside the pipeline becomes greater than the specified outlet pressure, the pressure relief pilot valve opens and simultaneously releases the pressure in the back pressure chamber.
At this time, the main valve gate is pushed open and keeps the main valve in open state.
When the pressure returns to the safety limit, the pilot valve closes simultaneously, and the back pressure chamber in main valve recovers pressure accumulation state, and main valve can be closed slowly.

 Pressure Relief Valve
The 'PRV12' range of relief valves provides a compact solution to the protection of sensitive instruments from the danger of overpressure under low flow conditions.
Pressure Adjustment: This is achieved by first removing protective cap, then using a suitable tool, turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase and anticlockwise to decrease 'cracking' pressure.
The valve can be supplied preset with the HTP1 or can be quickly retrofitted to existing units using simple installation instructions.

 Differential-Pressure Relief Valve
A relief valve has been designed to limit the differential pressure between two fluids that are not allowed to be mixed.
A simple check valve can be used to limit the pressure between two fluids, but when the valve opens to relieve differential pressure, one fluid flows into the other one; thus, a simple check valve is not suitable for a system in which the two fluids must not be mixed.
The present valve (see figure) includes two pistons, one of which is spring-loaded and slides in response to the balance between the differential pressure and spring forces.

 Pump Pressure Relief Valve
When the pump pressure on the bottom base area of the Piston (1) reaches a valve in which the pump pressure force created on the bottom base area exceeds the nitrogen force on the top base area, then the Piston (1) will start to move up.
As the pressure continues to increase, the Piston (1) will continue to compress the Nitrogen and move further up until the Piston Ports (6) move out of the LPS Packoff (2) and expose the Piston Ports(6) to the internal chamber of the Main Body (7).
When the pump pressure then drops so that the force from the Nitrogen pressure is greater the force exerted on the bottom area of the Piston (1), then the Piston (1) will move downward until the Piston Ports (6) are again under the LPS Packoff (2).
