  A user's view of Prestel.
Prestel is run by the British post office, known as British Telecom, which also runs the telephone system in the U.K. Over 900 organizations contribute information to the 230,000-page Prestel database.
In Europe, Prestel communication uses the CCITT V.23 format, an asymmetrical system in which the pages are transmitted to the user at 1200 bps, but typed responses from the user are received at only 75 bps (still a fast typing speed).
And since Prestel already has the lead in quality of service and range of information available from any electronic publishing service, it just might be that with continued research and development supported by the British government, the enhanced information system of the future might also be called Prestel.

Prestel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prestel, the brand name for the Post Office's Viewdata technology, was an interactive videotex system developed during the late 1970s and commercially launched in 1979.
Prestel Online, which was an Internet service provider spinoff, was sold to Scottish Telecom, and as of 5 June 2002, has since been merged into their other ISP activities.
The Prestel technology was also sold abroad to several countries, and in 1984 Prestel won a UK Queen's Award for Industry both for its innovative technology and use of British products (it largely ran on equipment provided by GEC).

 Prestel and its successors
Some Local Authorities were quick to see the potential of PRESTEL as a means of publishing community information: names like Kingtel and Herts 288 come flooding back to memory as examples of this Golden Age of pioneers.
The subsequent demise of PRESTEL and the overwhelming success of its French counterpart, Teletel, are matters of history.
It was the failure of the PRESTEL home market to leave the ground, together with the high cost of hosting and providing access to information on the service, that led the Local Authorities to seek alternative means of hosting their community viewdata services.

Both broadcast teletext and the GPO's Prestel services are sources of a great variety of information which can be received and displayed on the television screen.
Teletext uses a hitherto unused part of the television signal to send digitally-coded information through the air; Prestel sends similar information down the telephone line and then through a special adaptor into a television receiver.
The two systems have been developing independently but do use a common way of presenting information on the screen; the microcomputer with add-on teletext and Prestel decoders may be the means of bringing the systems together in a powerful new way.

However, it's worth saying that it didn't have to happen that way, as can be seen from the example of the French Minitel, which is a videotex system based on the same standard as that initially established in Britain.
