North End reached the FA Cup Final in the 1963-64 season, losing to West Ham 3-2 after a titantic struggle in front of a 100,000 capacity crowd.
Preston introduced a controversial plastic pitch in the late 1980s, a move as unpopular with the fans as it was with visiting teams.

The Preston players were rapturously cheered off at half time and despite the home side winning, the referee and his linesmen were met by a chorus of whistles and boos as they got close to the tunnel.
The Preston fans in the Bill Shankly Kop were singing and encouraging the home side for most of the game but their lack of numbers meant lots of their chants were barely audible.
The noise from the Town End was much louder, with continuous chants of "We're the one and only North End" and "Barmy army" occasionally starting in the Kop and spreading to the far end of the stadium, with some of the fans in the Tom Finney Stand also clapping along.
