All the western portions of Preston and Prestonpans towns and the adjacent hamlets are included within the barony of Prestongrange; and all the eastern portions of these towns and the adjacent villas and ancient mansions are within the barony of Preston, whose ancient cross, bearing date 1617, is still a conspicuous central object of interest.
Prestonpans became a police burgh in 1862, and under the Burgh Police Act of 1892 it is governed by a provost, 2 bailies, and 6 commissioners.
Prestonpans is in the pres­bytery of Haddington and the synod of Lothian and Tweeddale; the minister's stipend is £412 with manse.

Prestonpans is 10 miles east of Edinburgh (Scotland), with a population of about 5,500.
A milestone for the Prestonpans folk was the first tramcar to the town in 1909 which was made possible by the extension of the track from Levenhall to the foot of Prestongrange Road.
Prestonpans was originally quite heavily industrialised with the various mines, Bellfields' Pottery, salt works, brick works, soap works and of course the brewery which in its time was one of the most modern in Europe.

His Prestoungrange Baronial Court last year pardoned the witches executed in Prestonpans, one of the last acts he was able to carry out before his feudal powers were abolished in November.
In Prestonpans, it is planned to create an exhibition at the Gothenburg pub detailing the deaths of the witches and bringing to life the history of witchcraft in Scotland.
Most of the 81 witches executed in Prestonpans were killed for their part in the alleged assassination attempt on King James VI, when more than 200 witches were said to have gathered at North Berwick to conjure a storm intended to sink his ship as he returned from Denmark.

Prestonpans is a small town located in East Lothian on the south side of the Firth of Forth.
Towards the end of the 11th century a pirate named Althamer was caught up in a hurricane and was swept round Gullane Point into the Firth of Forth where his boat was wrecked on the rocks along the shore here.
Prestonpans at one time had sixteen breweries flourishing but they have all been closed down.

 Prestonpans : Battles of the '45
The name Prestonpans is perhaps best known to school children and Jacobites alike as the site of the famous victory of Bonnie Prince Charlie over the Hanoverian forces of King George II in Scotland on September 21st 1745.
It was re-enacted on its 250th Anniversary in 1995 both in Prestonpans and later in Milford, New York in 1999 as pictured below.
Scott of course had considerable association with Prestonpans as reported in his Journal and pictured.

 Scotsman.com News - Scotland - Witches plan casts spell over Lottery
The plans to commemorate men and women from Prestonpans who were executed in the 16th century on suspicion of witchcraft are now a step closer thanks to £14,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The memorial is likely to take the form of a mural, which is set to be unveiled this Hallowe'en, along with leaflets to explain the history of the Lothians witch trials.
The grant will also help to create an exhibition at the Gothenburg pub, in Prestonpans, detailing the deaths of the witches and exploring the history of witchcraft in Scotland, while a film to recreate events is also being considered.

Prestonpans was created a burgh in 1552 and over time it became a collection of joined villages including Aldhamer, Preston and Cuthill.
Known Mainly for its coal and salt industries, there was also fishing (including oyster beds offshore) and the making of pottery and bricks.
Harlawhill House, from the late 17th and early 18th century is described as 'a townscape gem despite dereliction'.

The Battle of Prestonpans was the first battle of the 1745 Jacobite Rising.
Cope was expecting an attack from the west but the Jacobites were led on a little known path through a bog, which Cope had thought would provide some protection to his army, and were able to attack from the east.
The victory at Prestonpans meant that almost all of Scotland was under Jacobite control which gave the Jacobites the morale boost they needed.

There is a memorial to Col. Gardiner which may be seen from the road, although it is on the other side of the parallel railway line, and there is another monument on the A198 junction immediately behind Cockenzie Power Station.

Brewing ceased at Prestonpans in March 1962, however, the maltings were used for a little longer until the entire brewery closed in 1964.
