Topic: Prestressed concrete

Prestressed concrete - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prestressing requires the use of high strength tendon materials (like prestressing steel wires, strands or bars) because time-dependent concrete strains (due to concrete creep under compressive stresses and concrete shrinkage due to the drying and hardening process) tend to reduce the tension in the tendons over time.
After the concrete has acquired adequate strength, the tendons are cut at the bulkheads; the tendon anchorage force is transferred from the bulkhead to the concrete by means of bond between the prestressing steel and the concrete.
After the concrete has been placed and gained sufficient strength, the embedded tendons are stressed and the compressive reaction to the tensile forces in the tendons prestresses the concrete.

OTEP Precast concrete industry Prestressed concrete
Prestressed concrete combines two high quality materials, concrete and steel, retaining the best of both.
Prestressed concrete eliminates cracking, improves the yield of the material by using the entire section, makes lighter constructions and makes it possible to realize wide spans with limited heights.
The prestressed components require no maintenance, insurance premiums are lower and fire resistance is generally sufficient to eliminate any additional and costly treatment.

 What is Prestressed Concrete
The unique characteristics of prestressed concrete allow predetermined, engineering stresses to be placed in members to counteract stresses that occur when the unit is subjected to service loads.
Concrete is then poured into the forms encasing the strands.
Prestressed or pretensioned before it leaves the plant, a slight arch or camber is noticeable.

 Post-Tensioning Institute
Prestressed concrete or masonry has internal stresses (forces) induced into it during the construction phase for the purpose of counteracting the anticipated external loads that it will encounter during its lifecycle.
Concrete, masonry, and most cement based products are very strong in compression, or, in other words, they have a high capacity to resist compressive forces.
The prestressing steel is housed in a sheathing or duct to allow it move as the tensioning force is applied after the concrete cures.

PB Network | Issue 57 | PB's Role in Prestressed Concrete Transportation Structures in the U.S.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The principles of prestressed concrete were understood by about 1910, and practical designs using this material were introduced in France in the early 1930s by Eugene Freyssinet.
PB was one of the first firms to use prestressed concrete in U.S. transportation structures and has been responsible for the innovative design of many types of prestressed concrete structures.
One notable item was believed to be the first use of spliced prestressed concrete girder bridges in the U. This was accomplished by using cast-in-place concrete box girder caps with 31-m (104 foot) -long precast girders, the longest available at that time, providing spans of 40 m (132 feet).
