Presupposition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In this respect, presupposition is distinguished from entailment and implication.
Critical discourse analysis identifies the ideological function of presuppositions, particularly in the concept of synthetic personalisation.
A variety of Christian apologetics, called presuppositional apologetics, argues that the existence or non-existence of God is the basic presupposition of all human thought, and that all men arrive at a worldview which is ultimately determined by the theology they presuppose.

Where have some of the presuppositions gone?
The presupposition triggered by predicates like know, regret and be odd that, that their complement clauses are true, shares with the existential presupposition of definite descriptions the property of remaining constant under negation.
As noted, the prototypical presupposition types, as well as the rest of those indicated in Table 1, differ from conventional implicatures, as characterized by Grice and listed in Table 2, in that presuppositions are entailed by the matriarch of the S family (S herself) while conventional implicatures are not.
Presuppositions associated with focusing constructions (the cleft and pseudocleft constructions) are not easily lifted, as shown in (22).

Presupposition: Anything in a sentence or conversation which has to be assumed for the rest of the sentence or conversation to have meaning.
Presuppositions cannot be proven and we cannot categorically demonstrate that they are "true" or "right" but we tend to accept them.
Accepting the presuppositions becomes an act of faith since they cannot be "proven." If we accept these presuppositions, then we will find or create them in our experience, rather than waiting for the proof that such intentions exist.

 Presuppositions of faith
Presuppositions of faith are beliefs assumed or supposed to be true, even if they cannot be proven; their truth is just taken for granted.
Reasonable does not mean proven, because what is proven is not faith; but it means it is not contradictory with other truths that we know by other means, as for example from nature; and that is sound thinking, in accordance with an intelligent understanding.
This means that we should "weigh" the presuppositions in which the teachings are based.

 Presuppositions as nonassertions
The standard diagnostic for distinguishing presupposition from assertion is survival in a variety of linguistic contexts: embedded under negation or a possibility modal such as maybe, it is possible that; in a question; or in the antecedent of a conditional.
I propose that grammatical presuppositions are a consequence of a natural limit on how much can be asserted in any given utterance, where what is asserted is what is presented as the main point of the utterance?what the speaker is going on record as contributing to the discourse.
In their view "presupposition" had been used for a disparate group of phenomena, whereas "conventional implicature" referred to a well-defined subset which was the subject of their analysis.

Rediscovering the Historical Jesus: Presuppositions and Pretensions of the Jesus Seminar
It is found that the principal presuppositions of (i) scientific naturalism, (ii) the primacy of the apocryphal gospels, and (iii) the necessity of a politically correct Jesus are unjustified and issue in a distorted portrait of the historical Jesus.
Well, that leads to the second presupposition which I wanted to discuss, namely, sceptical critics presuppose that our most primary sources for the life of Jesus are not the Gospels, but rather writings outside the New Testament, specifically the so–called apocryphal gospels.
The third presupposition of the Jesus Seminar is that religion in general and Jesus in particular must be politically correct.

A presupposition is a type of unspoken sentence that systematically “rides on the coattails” of a spoken sentence: whenever the spoken sentence is accepted into the conversational background, the unspoken presupposition sentence gets in too.
Since presuppositions are inherited by larger sentences, we can see how a presupposition P could be acceptable even when a sentence S (which presupposes P) isn't acceptable.
Hence a presupposition is not just a sentence that follows validly from the sentence presupposing it.

In attempting to see how the Christian presuppositions to science have developed since 1500, we cannot in the space allotted give a complete history of their unfolding down to the present day.
Thus the Christian scientist must insist that his presuppositions are not merely one set of starting points among others, one hypothesis among a number, but that they are only presuppositons that make science possible.
