A Dress A Day: You Don't Have to Be Pretty
I'm pretty agnostic about leggings, but the whole discussion (which centered on the fact that it can be *really* hard to look good in leggings) got me thinking about the pervasive idea that women owe it to onlookers to maintain a certain standard of decorativeness.
Pretty is a tyrannical standard to live your entire public life trying to maintain.
Act One ends with the doctor asking "Is she pretty?" "No she's not," comes the response, "she's beautiful!" This sets up the conflict for the second act, because while it might be possible to triumph over a merely pretty rival, it's impossible to triumph over true beauty.

How sweet it is ...or is it? - The Boston Globe
Now, though, the once-banished word is becoming acceptable for a variety of reasons, not the least as an antidote to the depressing state of the world that more strident political art could protest but not cure.
But while the DeCordova Museum's new show, "Pretty Sweet: The Sentimental Image in Contemporary Art," is filled with dolls (Barbie to baby), stuffed animals, and dogs with big wet eyes, it's not all hearts and flowers.
There's even a section of the show with a parental warning sign, lest children unexpectedly encounter such works as Ilona Anderson's "Possession," a wall installation of embroidered white linen tissue-box covers, the slits where you pull out a tissue bordered by tufts of hair, turning the conventionally feminine object into a vagina.

 Gwen's Petty, Judgmental, Evil Thoughts
Prettiness is a power, but not always useful to its bearer, I think.
The whole "prettiness" thing is such a struggle with women...but let's fact it, pretty people get their foot in the door first.
I want to be pretty, but I hate myself for caring, because I realize how ridiculously unimportant it is. But I can't stop my self-worth from being tied up in how attractive I am.

We now associate prettiness with New Age music, mindless tripe to be played in the background by yuppies with no taste.
Her prettiness is not an intellectual deficiency, but a political stance.
Anderson's forms are not conventional, and the prettiness is a result of her formal ideas.

 The Beauty Of Women
Prettiness is usually associated with romantic love and the natural feministic qualities that a woman possesses.
Another way to represent prettiness is by comparing the types of beauty to clothing.
A woman might wear a "cute" outfit; Prettiness would be more associated with something like a prom dress (modest, of course.) Most pretty girls are confident in their looks, but do not necessarily recognize the fact that they are indeed pretty.

 tecosystems: Pretty is a Feature
That may seem trivial in the context of discussions of "enterprise features" and so on, but the fact of the matter is that if you're going to be spending a lot of time in an environment, it's better if it looks nice (one reason why I just spiffed up my Gnome install).
Pretty is a feature for developers because developers are people.
I risk coming off as a UI zealot by saying this, but too much time is spent on feature development and not enough on UI development.

Punishment, Prettiness, and Panderichthys | UberKuh
PHILADELPHIA -- We might not be able to resist a pretty face after all, according to a report from the University of Pennsylvania.
Although participants reported that they could not see the faces and that they were guessing on each trial, they were able to accurately rate the attractiveness of those faces.
In their second and third experiments, the researchers explored the notion of "priming" whether or not seeing a pretty face makes a viewer more likely to associate that face with positive attributes.

 New Statesman - Bad impressions
It may well now be the inevitable fate of all radical art, every stab at authenticity and intensity, to end up on the mugs, mouse-mats and novelty T-shirts of corporate gift shops.
But this should not blind us to the irony of the least ingratiating painters in 19th-century France having become a byword for prettiness - that a movement whose highest value was exposure to nature has been relegated to the status of domestic eye-candy.
As majestically subtle in its colouring and almost as rigorously faceted as a high cubist work by Braque, it seems to have been painted with a hammer.

Welcome to the Best of New Orleans! Art Review 01 27 04
Beauty, for instance, has long been associated with truth, whereas prettiness almost never is. It is prettiness, not beauty that is skin deep: a pleasing appearance, a notable absence of flaws.
Francis Bacon said, "There is no perfect beauty without some strangeness in the proportion." But prettiness is notable for its absence of anything strange, odd or "off." As Dostoyevsky put it, "The awful thing is that beauty is mysterious...

Museums and the Web 2003: Papers: Kolb and Strecker
Prettiness may attract users once, but only useful information and topicality make them come back again and again.
But, if they do not find the information they are searching for or if the pages are out-of-date they also will leave the site after a short while and will neither recommend it nor come back to it later.
So the visual design of the pages is important as an enhancement of the information presented on a web site, but without topical content, prettiness has no value at all.

 * Dusted Reviews - John Morton *
I don't listen to much music that's this stereotypically pretty, but I can relate to music boxes and accept them as signifiers of calm because I often fell asleep to them as a kid.
So the prettiness in this context suggests something different: namely, the contrived accessibility of many recent American composers and of film scorers like John Williams.
I'm not attacking major-key music, but if a piece is pretty, the prettiness is rarely the only aspect of it I like, and on "Slurry," Morton gives me little else to focus on.

Of course it’s genetic–what else could it be? at Pandagon
We all know that prettiness is strictly a result of genes and has no enviromental component, or what little it does is mere window dressing.
And since prettiness is genetic like intelligence, it’s certainly possible and downright likely there is a link between prettiness and intelligence.
And, as this T-shirt suggests, there is plenty of clothing-related evidence that there is an inverse relationship between prettiness and mathmatical aptitude.

The twentieth-century philologist and fantasy writer J. Tolkien had little use for Shakepearean fairy portrayals or for Victorian diminutive fairy prettiness and whimsy, aligning his elves with the god-like and human-sized elves of Norse mythology, the Ljoslfar.
He conceived a race of beings similar to humans but fairer, with greater spiritual powers, keener senses, and a closer empathy with nature.
In 1954, Poul Anderson introduced grim Norse-style elves in his fantasy novel The Broken Sword and made them full-sized.
