Nine Inch Nails : Pretty Hate Machine - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Pretty Hate Machine was something unique in industrial music -- certainly no one else was attempting the balladry of "Something I Can Never Have," but the crucial difference was even simpler.
Instead of numbing the listener with mechanical repetition, Pretty Hate Machine's bleak electronics were subordinate to catchy riffs and verse-chorus song structures, which was why it built such a rabid following with so little publicity.
Perhaps the greatest achievement of Pretty Hate Machine was that it brought emotional extravagance to a genre whose main theme had nearly always been dehumanization.

"Pretty Hate Machine" could, in a sense, be seen as a concept album -- a mapping of the painful emotions in a breakup.
Pretty Hate Machine is Trent Reznor - the only member of NIN - sitting in his bedroom, making a seminal album, with heart felt lyrics, power, malevolence and most importantly passion.
In a recent interview he admitted to what I've always felt - his subsequent albums were his personal joy rides, his attempt to push boundaries with technology at the sacrifice of music; ergo, personal gratification and little substance nor longevity.

 Interview "Pretty Hate Machine" 1996
The part is a short, slinky bit of fuzz-box roughage that has the thick, rubbery menace of classic Mot"rhead, and when the tape rolls, Hetfield attacks his instrument with such muscular intensity that you can actually hear the guitar strings bend and groan under the stress of his picking.
Actually, nailing the Hetfield overdub on "Wasting My Hate" is a breeze compared with the next evening's chore: cutting a simple, tingling Hammett guitar flourish in the moody verse sections of the epic grinder "Bleeding Me." Hammett does take after take - to no one's satisfaction.
Ulrich feels the song needs something, but he can't quite articulate what that something is. Hetfield proposes a riff in the style of "Fade to Black," his meditation on hopelessness and suicide from Metallica's 1984 album, Ride the Lightning, but he and Hammett can't agree on where the beat should go.

Pretty Hate Machine became one of the albums I played most during the remainder of my stay in Kenya along with Type O Negative's October Rust and Bloody Kisses, Sepultura's Roots, Metallica's And Justice for All, Rancid's And Out Come the Wolves, Weezer's blue album, and Machine Head's Burn My Eyes.
If that's not a big enough accomplishment for you, consider this, too: "Pretty Hate Machine" is, in my opinion, NIN's poppiest album, so it helped bridge the gap between pop culture and industrial rock.
Even though I think 1994's "The Downward Spiral" was Nine Inch Nails' best release, "Pretty Hate Machine" is required listening for all NIN fans, fans of industrial rock, and those who are new to Trent Reznor.

The art work of this first album is created under the concept of "some kind of turbine that looks like rib bones." Trent Reznor likes to consider human beings as machines in his songs.
If so, "Pretty Hate Machine" means "Human," which can also refer to "Female" since Trent is a male.
He may have designed the CD cover to convey a message about "the humans he dislikes a bit" or "the love that even accepts the original sin." If you pay close attention to the cover, it is designed with bright blue and pink colors.

The dark, atmospheric Pretty Hate Machine, written, played and co-produced by Reznor, was largely synthesizer-based, but the material was transformed onstage by a ferocious wall of guitars, and show-stealing Lollapalooza performances in 1991.
Inspired by the live band, Reznor added an abrasive guitar barrage to the Nine Inch Nails sound for the Broken EP (a subsequent remix set was titled Fixed), which hit the US Top 10, winning a Grammy for "Wish".
