Semi-prick ears are ears that stand straight up but the tops of the ears tip over toward the front.
Prick ears are supposedly for those dogs that are working in open pastures and warmer climes, where the increased surface area helps collect more sound and affords them a better sense of hearing.
Dogs with prick ears are also presumed to present a more threatening appearance to stock and can be a more desired trait, depending on your need and style of working sheep.

DVD Times: Region 2 Reviews: Prick Up Your Ears
Joe Orton was one of the bad boys of swinging London; darling of the chat shows, hero of the anti-establishment and winner of several awards for his plays, "Loot" and "Entertaining Mr Sloane".
The film "Prick Up Your Ears" - the title involves an apt anagram - charts Orton's life in a series of flashbacks and benefits from a stunning performance by Gary Oldman in the leading role.
The DVD is a budget release from Carlton, which I managed to pick up for £6.

 'Prick Up Your Ears' (R)
"Prick Up Your Ears," the new film biography of the incendiary British farceur Joe Orton, leaves a very sour taste in your mouth.
Wallowing in the sordid minutiae, the movie focuses extensively on Orton's carousing lavatory escapades -- he was an indiscriminate pickup artist -- and it carries with it the stink of the urinals.
Orton, for all the unadulterated, hedonistic fun he supposedly notched on his belt, was a closet moralist and just as much fueled by righteous indignation and anger as his '60s contemporaries.

"Prick Up Your Ears" tells the story of British playwright Joe Orton and his lover Kenneth Halliwell, who, in 1967, bludgeoned Orton to death in his bed.
The parallel between Orton and Lahr creates a second pairing, and in "Ears" it is the more important one: the similar predicaments of Halliwell and Lahr's wife.
In "Prick Up Your Ears", Joe and Ken are the protagonists, Lahr and his wife only supporting figures.

PRICK UP YOUR EARS is the tragic, true story of flamboyant British playwright Joe Orton, from his days as a drama student, through his meteoric rise to fame in British theatre, to his violent death at the hands of his envious lover Kenneth Halliwell.
This witty and moving portrait of Britain's daring and rebellious playwright, Joe Orton, is based on the true story of the tragic murder-suicide of Orton, at the hands of his long-term lover, Ken Haliwell, in the 1960s and the subsequent biography of the same name by New York drama critic John Lahr.
PRICK UP YOUR EARS, skillfully directed by Stephen Frears, traces the outrageous life of the famed playwright, portrayed by Gary Oldman.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Prick Up Your Ears
What is known is that an uncultured Orton was rescued from consignment to a Leicester working-class hell by gaining entrance into the Royal Academy of the Dramatic Arts, where he met the older, worldlier Halliwell, in whom he explored his heretofore dormant homosexuality while receiving a crash course in literature and playwriting.
Prick Up Your Ears was enthusiastically received in 1987 partially because of its unusually frank depiction of homosexuality, which, in the waning days of the Reagan era, lent the film an air of exoticness and transgression.
But as a speculative depiction of how this stormy partnership ended in murder, Frears and Bennett do wind up with a semi-interesting commentary on the cruelty of artistic creation (though an attempt at mirroring this through Lahr's relationship with his wife is oddly abandoned).

Joe Orton was briefly the embodiment of a certain kind of '60s rebel, and Stephen Frears's film adaptation of the British playwright's biography successfully conjures up that outrageous spirit.
The hostile, fussy codependency between Orton (Gary Oldman) and his brooding lover Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina) forms the centerpiece of a story that features not only Orton's success and his brutal demise at Halliwell's hand, but also a vivid depiction of what gay sexuality meant in a repressive era.
Ostensibly a biopic of the late Joe Orton (a British playwright of some note in the Britain of the middle Sixties), the movie is really a study of a relationship.

THE PLAYWRIGHT Joe Orton, whowas bludgeoned to death in 1967 by his lover, Kenneth Halliwell, after a 16 years' relationship, is the subject of the most explicitly and exultantly homosexual mainstream film in the English language, Prick Up Your Ears.
In the fear that Joe would drop him--a fear nurtured by the extremely outspoken diary Joe kept leaving around for him to read--Halliwell took a hammer, went up to his sleeping lover, and methodically bashed his head to a pulp.
By making the Orton-Halliwell relationship jokier than it actually was, the film gives up a further chance to be something more than a giggly whine about the heterosexual world's incomprehensoin of homosexuals and its allegedly fatal consequences.
