Prideaux John Selby was a versatile gentleman naturalist, born on 23 July 1788 in Alnwick, Northumberland, he inherited Twizell House and its estate in 1804, and throughout his life did not neglect his duties as a landowner, magistrate, High Sheriff, and then Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland.
Natural History and Ornithology had been Selby's passion from youth, and Christine Jackson notes, in her excellent introduction to the Sotheby's catalogue of the sale of the Bradley Martin collection of Selby watercolours, that, besides `collecting and preserving birds, Selby had observed them in the field, making careful notes of their habitat and habits.
Selby and Sir William Jardine both purchased their copper plates and etching ground from Pontifex of London, and their letters refer to the progress made in drawing and "biting" or etching their plates.

As a boy, he had studied the habits of local birds, drew them, and learned how to preserve and set up specimens.
Later, Selby became an active member of several British natural history societies and contributed many articles to their journals.

About 1828, Lear began work as a zoological draughtsman, gaining employment at the Zoological Society and working with, among other notables, Prideaux John Selby.
It was there he also met John Gould, the Society¹s taxidermist, who was to become one of the great nineteenth century naturalist publishers.
Lear drew sixty-eight plates and many of the foregrounds for Gould¹s Birds of Europe (1832-1837) and also contributed nine of the thirty-four plates that comprised Gould¹s A Monograph of the Family of Toucans.

Fauna boreali-americana; or, The zoology of the northern parts of British America: containing descriptions of the objects of natural history collected on the late northern land expedition, under command of Captain Sir John Franklin, R.N. Published under the authority of the Right Honourable the secretary of state for colonial affairs.
When John Richardson returned from Franklin's expedition, Swainson arranged the specimens for the ornithology volume, wrote some of the text, and drew the designs for the plates (lithographs colored by hand).
This was the first illustrated zoological publication subsidized by the British government.
