As glacier enter a section of increasing slope, or near where they enter the sea they may speed up and the surface ice especially is under tension.
The biggest is the Lambert Glacier which flows to the sea over in the Australian sector, it is up to 80 km wide and flows near the sea at a rate of about 1 km per year into the Amery Ice shelf at Prydz Bay.
Where a glacier is forced to turn round a bend big pressure ridges form on the inside of the bend and very large crevasses on the outside of the bend.

By way of the Ferrar Glacier they reached the ice-cap after considerable troubles, not the least of which was the loss of the data necessary for navigation contained in an excellent publication called Hints to Travellers, which was blown away.
Threading their way amidst the ice disturbances which mark the head of the glaciers, the party pushed blindly forward in air which was becoming thick with snow-drift.
But away from the main stream of the glacier, and separated from it by land now known as Hope Island, was a narrow and steep snow slope forming a gateway which opened on to the main glacier stream.

These results concern the simulation of katabatic airflows on extra-fine grids.[Priestley Glacier], the interaction of katabatic airflows of Reeves and Priestley Glaciers at their convergence, the simulation of the polynya and determination of the oceanograpfhy sub-model sensitivity on the same area and the Operational Meteorology and computational state of art.

Based on the roughly linear distribution of Cambro-Ordovician plutons and batholiths throughout the orogen, the continental margin must have approximately coincided with the present day Transantarctic Mtns.
A major discontinuity in this linear trend occurs at Byrd Glacier where plutonic and high-grade metamorphic rocks to the north are juxtaposed to the south by a low-grade sedimentary sequence.
Neoproterozoic sedimentation is suggested throughout the Transantarctic Mtns, while E to M Cambrian sedimentation and volcanism have been documented by fossils and isotopic dating only in that portion of the Transantarctic Mtns between Byrd Gl and the Pensacola Mtns.

The revival of polar exploration began in about 1925 and was based on new tools such as the airplane, which enabled explorers to avoid the obstacles of surface travel and to cover a large area in a short period of time.
Lars Christenson, a Norwegian whaling magnate, promoted Norwegian expeditions in 1930 to 1931 and 1936 to 1937; during the latter, aerial mapping was done of an area from 20øE to 82øE, resulting in eleven sheets at 1:250,000-scale and one at 1:500,000-scale, published in Oslo in 1946.
By the end of 1961, large areas of the continent had been photographed from the air, and reconnaissance mapping - largely a matter of plotting accurately portions of the outcropping rock features or special large ice features such as glaciers - was available for major features.
