This source is thought to have written the majority of the book of Leviticus, as well as stories that parallel those in J (the Jahwist text) and in E (the Elohist text).
Contrasted with JE The Priestly source follows the combined JE source based on the Jahwist and Elohist narratives, although the narrative of the priestly source is noticeably small.

Leviticus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In this, almost the entirety of Leviticus is identified as being from a single earlier document, the priestly source.
While this source is said to originate amongst the Aaronid priesthood, Leviticus is nevertheless said to consist of several layers of accretion from earlier collections of laws.
The priestly source is envisioned as a later, rival, version of the stories contained within JE, and the Holiness Code thus being the law code that the priestly source presented as being dictated to Moses at Sinai, in the place of the Covenant Code.

The four sources are, the Yahwist, the Elohist, the Deuteronomist, and the priestly source.
This source comes from the Northern part of the Hebrew kingdom. This is evident from the prominance given to the Northern figures such as Joseph, his mother Rachel and his sons Ephraim and Manasseh and places like Bethel and Schechem which are both sanctury cities of the Northern kingdom.
The E source is often regarded as a revision of J or Yahwist source and it is not often easy to distinguish the two.

Source Criticism of the Bible - A general discussion
In both cases one document was used as a source document for the second (or it could be remotely possible that in both cases a third unknown source document was copied by two authors).
Source criticism has a long history, and is one of the foundational methodologies of the historical critical method.
It is characteristic of the source critical problem that given two variant readings of certain texts where an obvious literary relationship exists, the question becomes to decide the probability that the change went from ‘A' to ‘B' or in the opposite direction from ‘B' to ‘A'.

The Operation of Sacrifice in the "Priestly" Source   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The "Priestly" source was probably compiled and redacted with the other sources of the Pentateuch during the fifth century B. C., after Ezekiel 40-48 were appended to the prophetic work.
Within the Priestly source, however, burnt sacrifice and cereal sacrifice gained in importance at the expense of the sacrifice of sharings.
That sort of consistency in some reference to the covenant in Ezekiel, the Priestly source, and the work of the Deuteronomic school, is far from an innovation, as compared to the clearly covenantal sense of sacrifice in the oldest sources of the Pentateuch, conventionally known as "J" (for "the Yahwist," ca.

It is not my intent in this document to fully explain or defend the source theory, but rather to provide an example of an instance of disentangling two sources according to the source theory, and to make it easy to see what the individual hypothetical source stories would have looked like.
Source theory in the Pentateuch is often referred to by the abbreviation JEPD, which comes from the initials for the four hypothetical sources:

According to 2 Kings 22-23, Josaih commands that the Temple in Jerusalem be repaired; a scroll is disovered in the course of the construction and taken to the king.
This reflects his perspective on the priestly movement, which he believed reprepsented a religious decline from the pinnacle of spirituality embodied by the prophets.
Traditionally, the P source is identified with the laws regulating sacrifice, the priesthood, the sabbath, etc., and is found throughout the Torah.

Israel Knohl has shown that the Holiness Code postdates the base Priestly source (of which female purity is a part), and that a "Holiness School" went on to redact that source and, for that matter, the rest of the Torah.
The Epistle is an eyewitness to the priestly laws in Babylon prior to the Holiness redaction.
The P source was a manual for priests, and if a priest tried to claim it had come from Moses, there was an Amos or a Jeremiah to mock him.

"Pentateuchal Studies Today" by Gordon Wenham
The dating of the sources was questioned, the historicity of the narratives was disputed, even the principles underlying source division were challenged.
The original sources, it is held, were non-contradictory and not repetitious, and the documentary hypothesis labours to reconstruct them.
Thus, if it is right to distinguish sources here, which Moberly doubts, both the old E source and late P source agree that there is a distinction to be made between the religious experience of Moses and that of the patriarchs.

Chiasm, variant sources, and literary relationships. Bible Commentary. Genesis Chapter 4, 5
It is obvious on consideration of this particular piece of editing that an array of source materials were edited into the book of Genesis, and in the case of this story of Judah and Tamar it would seem that the spot of insertion was not chosen with consistency foremost in mind.
In Genesis chapter one the book opens with a fragment from the priestly source, and then in Genesis chapter two a couple of parables rom the Yahweh source are introduced, and then in Chapter five another fragment from the priestly source appears.
The priestly source, which is interrupted by the insertion, then picks up the thread of narrative continuity in chapter five, and this would suggest that the P source was also a separate literary work.

P (the Priestly source, so called because it seems most concerned with aspects of the formal worship in the temple); it was said to come from the exile or shortly thereafter -- sixth to fifth centuries B.C. Mostly made up of the genealogies and priestly ritual described in Genesis through Numbers.
D (the Deuteronomic source, so called because it includes mostly just the book of Deuteronomy); the author or editor of this section was assumed to be responsible for the framework of the historical account that runs from Joshua through 2 Kings.

It is in fact a composite of four different source documents cleverly combined in such a way as to appear to be one continuous narrative chronicling, along with God's laws, the origin and early history of the Hebrew people.
The priestly source, P, was written after J and E but before D. The key to P's timing lies in the fact that its writers were aware of the Assyrian conquest of Israel in 722, and they referred to J and to E. However, the writers of P were unaware of D.
According to the E source the hero and founder of the faith was Moses while in J it was Aaron.

A century of source criticism has shown that several strands of tradition were woven together by editors to produce the Torah as we have it today.
The priestly story of creation shows a familiarity with Ancient Near Eastern themes that we see in the Enuma Elish: the world in chaos; darkness over the abyss; creation of light; creation of a dome for the sky; creation of dry land; creation of heavenly lights; creation of humankind; divine rest and celebration.
In this Priestly story, human beings are created with their own dignity, and share the divine gifs of procreating life and sharing the divine rest.

Tribe of LEVI - Levites -DNA
The researchers from England and Israel say they found that members of the kohanim, who call themselves descendants of Aaron, the biblical high priest and brother of Moses, share a Y chromosome with similar genetic markers that distinguishes them from the general Jewish population.
And the best way to do that was to compare the Y chromosome, which is passed from father to son, of the kohanim with that of the general Jewish population to see if there was any difference, Goldstein said.
"If it's in fact true that father-to-son inheritance of priestly status has been fairly strictly adhered to, that would make the prediction that the Y chromosome carried by priests should be in some sense distinguishable from the general population of Y chromosomes," Goldstein said.

More recently, however, some biblical scholars are questioning the validity or at least the relevance of source criticism, especially since the source critics themselves cannot reach a consensus regarding which passages should be attributed to which sources.
The same variety in the use of the divine names, for example, is often now explained in terms of either the literary style of the author (or the final editor) or his theological emphases, or both.
