  Primal Therapy With Infants
In undertaking primal therapy with infants, a number of boundary conditions are important to consider.
Instead primal feelings are relegated to categories of "unnecessary fussiness" or "terribleness." Many times, primal catharses are seen as spoiled and irrational expressions which need to be controlled and eradicated.
However, once recognized as primal material, parents are able to see these explosive behaviors as therapeutically valuable and are therefore more able to provide empathy and support to their infants.

 Sam Turton's Primalworks: Ask Sam
The high expectations of primal were quickly attacked by the more conservative therapy and medical establishment, leading to a rapid decline in practitioners, and a general public opinion that "scream therapy" was just another wacky fad.
A successful course of primal integration allows those blockages to be released so that the organism is in much fuller contact with itself, and able to live life in all its richness.
The primal integration process allows you to be what you are and feel what you feel, instead of trying to suppress or hide it, as we are often taught in our restricted culture.

The hallmark of Primal Theory has always been that each persons experience is unique and as we open ourselves to feel the truth of our childhood experience, all the answers we need will be right there, waiting for us.
Primal Therapy has for thirty years challenged traditional diagnostic types, succeeding where others have failed.
Primal Therapy/Theory, sees its purpose as restoring one's ability to "feel" and once major repression is lifted, symptoms gradually fall by the wayside.

Primal Therapy: What It Is and What It Is Not by Réal Beaulieu
And this is the essence of primal therapy.
The role of the Primal therapist is to help the patient to re-experience and express the pain that was repressed, with full connection to the source of the traumatic event or painful prolonged situation that caused the repression in the first place.
Also, inherent to the nature of Primal therapy, there is the danger that the primal patient, having been promised a cure, puts too much hope and reliance on "feelings" alone.

Primal therapy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Primal Therapy is a trauma-based psychotherapy developed and popularized by Arthur Janov, Ph.D. Janov claimed that in Primal Therapy patients would find their real needs and feelings in the process of experiencing all their "Pain" (technical term of Primal Theory - see below).
According to Primal theory, psychological therapies which involve only talking about the problem (referred to as "Talking Therapies") are of limited effectiveness because the cortex, or higher reasoning area of the brain, has no ability to affect the real source of psychological pain in other areas of the brain.
Another case that is notable in connection with the issue of untrained therapists attempting to practice Primal Therapy is that of Alice Miller.

Primal integration - Psychology Wiki - A Wikia wiki
Primal Integration is a form of personal growth work first formulated by the Canadian Bill Swartly in the mid 1970s.
It differs from the Primal therapy of Arthur Janov in that the latter puts the emphasis on the skill of the therapist to direct the client’s work.
The founders of Primal Integration had a court struggle with Janov in 1974 when he tried to prevent them using the name ‘Primal’ which he claimed as his own 'brand'.

Primal Integration also contrasts with Janov's work in terms of the degree of self-direction and self-regulation required and the variety of ways in which primal material is worked with such as bodywork, transference, and face to face work.
Primal Integration is a very free-form approach that has more to do with attending to spontaneous processes of unfoldment than the application of particular techniques.
Primal Integration groups generally have two phases which alternate: A mainly verbal 'go-round' phase which is partially structured by the leaders and an unstructured phase during which the role of the leaders is to 'follow' processes emerging in individuals and in the group as a whole.

 New Age Psychotherapies
There may be reasonable disagreements over what constitutes successful therapy, but successful therapy should not require one to believe in God, reincarnation, alien abductions, possession by entities, inner children, Primal Pains, channeling, miracles, or any other metaphysical, religious or pseudoscientific notion.
Trying to find a meaningful common thread in the therapies is not too difficult, but its meaningfulness does not enhance the position of those who think these therapies are scientific.
None of these therapies have been proven effective by independent scientific studies, nor are they generally accepted as effective in the scientific community.

The techniques associated with Primal Therapy have changed a great deal since the early seventies when the likes of Yoko Ono and John Lennon screamed and cried out their early life traumas in front of the therapy's founder Dr. Arthur Janov.
Repressing primal pain brings into existence an 'unreal self', a pseudo self', which no longer experiences life fully, which is haunted by psychosomatic complaints, and which is unconscious of its true needs and the needs of others.
Though primal earned grudging respect in some quarters due to Janov's scrupulous attempts to validate his theories scientifically (it is actually one of the most scientifically researched Humanistic approaches) mainstream psychiatry (and society generally) has been very slow to respond to the implicit challenges voiced in Janov's works.

"The Seven Stages of Primal Therapy"  by Witty & Khamsi
During a primal, one makes contact with a past memory and the feeling connected with it, and has the experience of “descending.” A person “goes with” the feeling, lets it expand and become “big,” surrenders to it, and gives in to her body-movements.
During the first weeks of therapy, the person typically struggles with the issue of whether or not to commit fully to the therapy; she must decide if she is willing to take the personal risks that it entails.
A primal is a psychophysiological event in which one becomes aware of an early memory and allows oneself, in the present, to fully experience that memory and the feeling associated with it.

 John Lennon - Primal therapy
In the therapy you really feel every painful moment of your life - it's excruciating, you are forced to realise that your pain, the kind that makes you wake up afraid with your heart pounding, is really yours and not the result of somebody up in the sky.
Primal is 'it' in a certain sense for people who have blocked off that big chunk of pain and childhood and are always pulling against that, never being free.
In primal therapy people actually relive the scenes, the painful scenes of their life and have the emotions, the feelings expressed that they really didn't express when they were children and that's the big difference and that's what's so therapeutic."

 LOGIC CHAPTER FOUR
Occasionally, I still run into old Primal patients, some who were at the Primal Institute as long as back in 1971 when I first started working with Art Janov, who are still trying to make their lives work better by feeling their old negative feelings.
Instead, what they got from doing Primal therapy was the opportunity to hang out with other people who also felt they had never had any real friends and didn't really know how to have a good time socially.
So, as a Rebirther, I believe the reason life doesn't work for most Primal patients the way they hoped it would before Primal is not only that most of their unconscious Thought is negative, but also that they're deliberately occupying their conscious Thought with their Pain.

Primal therapy involves helping the patient to discover the traumas that are the root causes of this repression, then to access and FEEL these traumas at the deepest level.
There are reasons primal therapy didn't and will not flourish, it is not that there is a conspiracy against Janov or the therapists.
In "The New Primal Scream", Janov explains as clearly and eloquently as his subject allows how repression of early trauma is the cause of innumerable physical and psychological illness, and how reliving (relieving) the repressed trauma can heal both body and mind.

Primal Therapy covers the basic needs aspect of development--if such needs go unmet pain is laid down in the brain and pathologies develop.

We have learned in Primal Therapy that irrespective of whether the Pain is manifest in the body or in the mind, the person is not himself; there is a dislocation of function which is global.
