 Induction Coil - LoveToKnow 1911
Induction coils are employed for physiological purposes and also in connexion with telephones, but their great use at the present time is in connexion with the production of high frequency electric currents, for Röntgen ray work and wireless telegraphy.
In this break the magnetization of the iron core by the primary current is made to attract an iron block fixed to the end of a spring, in such a way that two platinum points are separated and the primary circuit thus interrupted.
A general description of the mode of constructing a modern induction coil, such as is used for wireless telegraphy or Röntgen ray apparatus, is as follows: The iron core consists of a bundle of soft iron wires inserted in the interior of an ebonite tube.

Induction coil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An induction coil or "spark coil" (archaically known as a Ruhmkorff coil) is a type of disruptive discharge coil.
The term "Induction coil" is also used for a coil carrying high-frequency AC and intended to induce eddy currents to heat objects placed in the interior of the coil, such as in induction heating or zone melting.
The induction coil was discovered during early experiments with electricity, probably by Nicholas Callan in 1836, and further refined by Heinrich Ruhmkorff.

The primary winding is connected to a capacitor forming an LC circuit which oscillates at a given frequency determined by the formula f=1/2*Pi*sqrt(LC).
The field then begins to collapse and recharges the primary capacitor, this continues until all of the energy of the energy in the primary oscillate has decayed due to inductive coupling between the primary and the secondary, and resistive losses in the primary circuit.
As the primary oscillations decay, the secondary is driven to higher and higher voltages due to resonance.

Nikola Tesla's Coil   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The Tesla Coil consists of a vibrator or transformer (parts A and B in the Diagram), two (2) high-voltage capacitors (H), a primary (D), and a secondary (E) connected to a ball terminal or antenna (G).
The secondary (or secondary coil) is a cone-shaped coil.
The primary of this Tesla Coil consists of two thick insulated copper wires which are resonated by the capacitors to equal the natural resonant frequency of the secondary.

 coil
The tesla coil was developed by Dr. Nikola Tesla - the inventor of the technical alternating current - around the next to last turn of the century.
The function of a tesla coil is quite simple: A high voltage transformer with an output voltage of at least 7500V and 20mA charges a high voltage capacitor.
A high output voltage is reached, because the inductance of the secondary is enormous in relation to the primary coil inductance.

 Square Tesla Coil
In addition, the Q of the coils is very important (the Q of a coil is equal to its inductive reactance divided by its resistance).
The coil was formed on four 6-position, twin-turnscrew type barrier blocks, which were mounted to the top of the enclosure near the edges, and bus wire was then connected to the barrier blocks to form the coil.
Coils L1 and L2 help to limit the amount of high-voltage kickback introduced to the AC power line, and help to prevent the high voltage kickback from damaging the power transformer.

 Tesla Coil Theory
Essentially, the capacitor and tesla coil primary form one pair of tank circuts: when the spark gap arcs, the momentary short circut created dumps the capacitor's charge into the coil's primary.
The "oudin" coil is a 1/2-wave variation on the tesla coil.
The oudin primary sometimes is merely a pair of taps on the secondary (an autotransformer).

 Tesla Coil Parts
The secondary coils is what receives the resonating charge from the tank circuit (the primary coil, high voltage power supply, spark gap, and capacitor are all the components of the tank circuit).
The primary coil is the the largest and probably the most dangerous part of the tesla coil.
The shape and form of this coil is very important, although the coil may work with a bad primary coil it will loose much energy if the shape is deformed from a relative circular winding.

Cement a disk in one end of the secondary coil with the head of the terminal screw inward and attach the coil to the screw.
If both coils are made to the sizes suggested, about 20 feet of wire will be required for the primary coil and 500 feet for the secondary coil.
After the primary coil is completed and the frame assembled, slip the secondary coil through the holes in the ends of the frame, centering it so it projects equally from each end of the primary coil.

 Solid-State Tesla Coil
The Tesla Coil is ideal for demonstrating and exploring the unusual phenomena that occur with high-frequency high-voltage energy.
The simplest method is to tap the primary coil on every turn and select the tap that produces the greatest voltage at the hot end of L2.
The coil discharge is most dramatic in a darkened room, and you should be able to light a fluorescent lamp at a distance of about two feet from the secondary coil.

 transformer
In many transformers the coils are wound on a core made of a material with high magnetic permeability; this intensifies the magnetic field induced by the current in the primary, increasing the transformer's efficiency.
Neglecting power losses (which are made small by careful design), the ratio of primary voltage to secondary voltage is the same as the ratio of the number of turns in the primary coil to the number of turns in the secondary coil.
The primary and secondary currents are in inverse proportion to the number of turns in the coils.

 Induction Coil
The original induction coil was invented in 1836 by Nicholas Callan (1799-1864), a priest and the professor of natural philosophy at St.
The primary coil is made of copper tape, wound around a core of iron wires.
Although he did not invent the induction coil, his name is often associated with it (particularly in Europe) because he successfully put together all of the elements of the coil, including the use of the condenser connected across the primary to moderate the back EMF of the collapsing magnetic field of the secondary.

 Tesla coil operation
In contrast, a Tesla Coil uses a relatively loose coupling between primary and secondary, and the majority of the voltage gain is due to resonance rather than the turns ratio.
The resonant frequency of the primary circuit is deliberately chosen to be the same as the resonant frequency of the secondary circuit so that the secondary is excited by the oscillating magnetic field of the primary.
Energy is gradually transferred from the primary resonant circuit to the secondary resonant circuit.

The vibrator is a flat, steel spring mounted at one end of the core of the coil in such a position that when the core is magnetized by a current flowing through the primary coil, one end of the vibrator is attracted to the core.
Therefore, when current flows from the battery through the contact screw, vibrator, primary coil, and then back to the battery, the core is magnetized and attracts the vibrator spring to it.

The inputs are beginning and ending RPM, RPM step, dwell angle in crankshaft degrees, resistance of primary ignition coil circuit in ohms, inductance of igntion coil primary in millihenries, battery voltage, and capacitance of ignition coil secondary in picofarads.
This model assumes 100% energy transfer from primary circuit to secondary circuit, which will not be the case in the real world - expect 70-85%.
You can jack up the dwell angle, which will allow more time for the coil to charge, but then the peak primary current rises at lower RPM, and the more current the more heat generated in the coil, which is not good either (generically, coils like 10 amps or less).

Re: Does the coil in the primary coil of a transformer loses some current when
In an ideal transformer, meaning one that does not exhibit any losses, the current in the primary coil is exactly equal to the current in the secondary coil multiplied by the turns ratio of secondary to primary.
The turns ratio of secondary to primary is 0.1, so if the secondary coil draws 1 Ampere, the primary will draw only 0.1 Amperes.
This means that only 5% of the power supplied to the primary is lost and not transferred to the secondary.
