  Prime
The name Prime (prima hora) belongs with those of Terce, Sext, None, to the short offices recited at the different hours of the day, called by these names among the Romans, that is, prima towards 6 a.m.; tertia, towards 9 a.m.; sexta, towards noon; nona towards 3 p.m.
This addition to Prime is a legacy bequeathed by the monks to the secular clergy.
In view of its origin and constitution, Prime is to be considered as the prayer of the beginning of the day, whereas Lauds is devoted to recalling with the dawn the memory of Christ's Resurrection, Prime is the morning hour which consecrates all the work of the day.

Christian liturgy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prime at 6 AM, Terce at 9AM, Sext at noon, None at 3PM, Vespers at the rising of the Vespers or Evening Star (usually at around 6PM), and Compline was said at the end of the day, generally right before bed time.
Through an unknown process, many elements of these liturgies began to be fixed, and a book called the Apostolic Constitutions, from the fourth century, shows an outline for the liturgy which is incorporated almost all Western and Eastern rites.
The eastern was heavily influenced by the use of the iconostasis, a large wall with doors in front of the altar, while the western church was seen as assimilating many of the pious practices of the pagans it had converted in northern Europe.

Since the liturgy is such a central part of the Christian life, I wish today to consider some aspects of the liturgical renewal so vigorously promoted by the Second Vatican Council as the prime agent of the wider renewal of Catholic life.
The liturgy, like the Church, is intended to be hierarchical and polyphonic, respecting the different roles assigned by Christ and allowing all the different voices to blend in one great hymn of praise.
In the question of liturgy we are dealing with the very core of Christian faith, so in experimenting with liturgy we need to be very, very clear that we are experimenting with the nature of the Church.

Canonical hours - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the Cluniac reforms of the 11th century there was a new emphasis on liturgy and the canonical hours in the reformed Benedictine priories with the Abbey of Cluny at their head.
The office of Prime was abolished, and the character of Matins changed so that it could be used at any time of the day as an office of Scriptural and hagiographical readings.
Clergy are still required by canon law to pray the entire Liturgy of the Hours each day, and the practice among religious communities of praying the canonical hours varies according to their rules and constitutions.

The Ways We Worship   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Liturgy is the principal bond between the earthly and the heavenly Church, a frail human participation in the glorious heavenly liturgy.
Liturgy, it is held, exists for the sake of the worshipers, and only by helping them to sort out their experience and to become "fully alive" does it glorify God.
The current crisis in liturgy, it would appear, is due in part to the withering away of various nonliturgical styles of piety (such as novena prayers, parish missions, eucharistic adoration, and the rosary) that sustained the faith and commitment of Catholics in the centuries before the Second Vatican Council.

What is the Liturgy of the Hours:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Whether prayed communally or by individuals, the Liturgy of the Hours is always the liturgical prayer of the Church: the prayer of Christ the priest and of the Body of Christ, the Church throughout the world and the Communion of Saints in heaven.
The Liturgy of the Hours follows the same liturgical calendar as that used for Mass and so the day of the Liturgical Year celebrated at Mass will be celebrated in that day's office as well.
Prime is the only hour the precise origin and date of which are known--at the end of the fourth century (see PRIME).

Certain subjects, such as liturgy, are always in danger of being shortened or of occupying a very small space in a college course.
But for priests, long past the student stage, it is difficult to undo the fixed liturgy lore of their student and early priest life; and the need of such a book as _The New Psalter and its Uses_ is, for those interested, a necessity.
Prime may be, and, probably with more appropriateness, should be used as morning prayer and said before Mass.

It is one of the chief difficulties in the history of liturgy.
The celebrant of Mass must be in the state of grace, fasting from midnight, free of irregularity and censure, and must observe all the rubrics and laws concerning the matter (azyme bread and pure wine), vestments, vessels, and ceremony.
But the distinctions that are really important to the student of liturgy are, first the historic division between the Mass of the Catechumens and Mass of the Faithful, already explained, and then the great practical distinction between the changeable and unchangeable parts.

Now the new liturgy has placed the Lord's Prayer at the conclusion of Lauds [Morning Prayer] and of Vespers [Evening Prayer]; and, with the recitation at Mass daily, we once again are praying the Lord's Prayer officially three times every day.

Whereas in the earlier monastic tradition the psalms for matins and all the daytime offices were fixed, and the monks attempted to sing through the entire psalter every week during vespers and vigils, Benedict greatly reduced the burden of these last two offices.

Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev: Orthodox Worship as a School of Theology » Liturgy and Prayer » OrthodoxEurope.org
The Liturgy is a “common act”, and without doubt demands the presence and active participation of the laity.
At the Liturgy everyone –bishops, priests and laity – stands before God with the same dignity, or rather with the same unworthiness, for “nobody attached to fleshly desires and delights is worthy to come near or approach” the communion of Christ’s Holy Mysteries.
The celebration of the Liturgy, whether it be by a bishop in his cathedral or a village priest, must be unhurried and dignified, and all words should be read as carefully and distinctly as possible.

Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek has urged his countrymen to respect the march and its participants by refraining from protests over calls to remove a cross planted near the camp.

Clearly, this is why philosophical distinctions within the Liturgy are of prime importance: if one is not capable of making the distinction between substantial and implicit presences of things, then one is going to fall into error regarding how the "worship space," should be arranged.
The adoption of this principle leads to a constant changing of the liturgy and the ensuing mentality that it must be novel or changing in order to be relevant and true to the wholly historical nature of liturgy.
Because the liturgy is a very powerful form of intellectual formation, those who say it consistently or with any intellectual and volitional involvement cannot escape its formative effects.

Making Liturgy Accessible: Planning for People with Special Needs
Not everyone who attends your rituals is going to be a perfect specimen of physical, emotional, and mental health, in the prime of their life, and fully capable of participating in whatever activity your liturgical design has planned.
If you are going to be using alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, sugar, or other mind altering substances in your liturgy, you need to have alternate arrangements available for those participants who cannot tolerate them or who choose not to indulge in them for spiritual reasons.
Similarly, someone with a severe disfigurement may come to your liturgy and shock the other participants so much that no one can concentrate on the ritual (granted this is a rare occurance, since most such people isolate themselves out of a justified fear of exactly such reactions).

The two main services are Vespers (evening prayer) and Matins (morning prayer), with lesser canonical hours during the day (prime, tierce, none, sext) and then compline before retiring.
The structure of the lesser canonical hours is closer, in size and scope, to the contemporary Latin Liturgy of the Hours.

Incidentally, the Liturgy of the Hours is available much more cheaply in the U.S, than in the UK...and also, in it's four volume set...as opposed to the three volume set that seem's pretty standard over here.
