Lesotho is the first African country to initiate Universal Voluntary Counselling and Testing (UVCT), and only the second country in the world, after Brazil, to do so.
Amid loud applause and joy, he announced that in the same way as he had been tested, his wife and himself had agreed to take the nation into their confidence once the result of the test was known.
Turning to the wider implications, the Prime Minister challenged all Heads of Government and National Leaders to take the test, and set an example that inspires their people to take steps to know their status, and thus break down the stigma and fear that is proving more devastating than the disease itself.

Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili on Wednesday declared a food emergency in the drought-hit southern African nation and appealed for aid from the international community and development agencies.
The prime minister said the appeal for international assistance was only a short-term measure, adding that the government would continue efforts to revitalize agriculture to achieve food security.
Lesotho's government declared a state of emergency in April 2002 and appealed for international help, but so far the response has been poor.

In a statement broadcast repeatedly over Radio Lesotho, the Prime Minister said Lesotho was currently facing "a very serious state of famine" arising out of a critical food shortage caused by several factors.
The Prime Minister said the preliminary indications from a nation-wide survey that was being conducted in Lesotho showed that there will be a very low harvest of cereals during the year 2002/2003 resulting in a cereal food deficit of about 220,000 metric tonnes.
The Prime Minister said whilst awaiting the results of the survey being undertaken throughout the country, the government had allocated an amount of twenty three million Rand for immediate intervention through the provision of food assistance to vulnerable families, for a period of one year, with effect from the beginning of May.
