In May, the minister announced progress in carrying out a review of police collection of crime statistics, and that publication of those statistics, suspended since July 2000, would be resumed at the end of the third quarter of 2001.
At the end of 2000, South Africa's prisons held 160,003 people, a slight fall on the previous year; approved prison accommodation grew from 99,834 to 101,991, and four additional prisons were under construction.

But one thing I do know: whether you love him or hate him, he has played a part in South Africa’s colourful history, and thanks to the likes of him and his cronies, apartheid must be the most well known Afrikaans word after aardvark.

In Cape Town he met Cecil Rhodes, Prime Minister of the Cape Colony, who directed his attention to the traditional European Cape Dutch architecture of the province and asked him to rebuild his house Groote Schuur (1893, 1897), now the official residence of South Africa’s prime ministers.
Applying the ideas of the English Arts and Crafts movement to local conditions, Baker produced a series of houses, both in the Cape Province and the Transvaal, which were instrumental in the revival of Cape Dutch architecture.

The 1959 Bantustan Policy was designed to turn the minority whites (3 million) into the majority and the fls (14 million) into the minority by subdividing the fls into 12 different minority ethnic groups who were sent to scattered fragments of land which they were supposedly granted independence.
In 1961, at the Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Conference in London, Dr Verwoerd campaigned for the South Africa to be transformed into a republic but the other African and Asian prime ministers rejected the idea and Dr Verwoerd withdrew the proposal.
