  Prime Lenses - an Introduction
A prime lens is one that has just one focal length only (in contrast to a zoom lens that covers a wider range of lengths).
Prime lenses come in a wide range of focal lengths from wide angles through to the very longest of tele-photo lenses used by many sports photographers and paparazzi.
Prime Lenses Combat Lazy Photographer Syndrome - when you have a zoom lens attached to your camera the temptation is to let your zoom do all the work and to leave your feet attached to the same piece of turf.

  DSLR Lens 101
The focal length of a lens is determined primarily by the curvature of its surfaces.
The greater the curvature, the thicker the lens, and the shorter the focal length is.
And, for a simple lens all measurements are relative to the optical center (focal plane) of the lens, which is also the physical center of the glass.

 Lens - Camerapedia.org
A lens (here: photographic lens, also known as objective lens or photographic objective) is an optical device through which light is focused in order to form an image inside of a camera either on film or on a digital sensor.
The focal length of a lens is the distance on the optical axis from the focal plane to the optical center of the lens when it's focused to infinity.
Lens coating thicknesses are typically measured in units of wavelengths of light, in nanometers (nm).

 Television Camera Lenses: The Basics
As the lens is zoomed, groups of these lens elements must move independently at precise speeds.
With prime lenses, the focal length of the lens cannot be varied.
A 10:1 zoom lens could have a 10 to 100mm, or a 100 to 1,000mm lens, and the difference would be quite dramatic.

In Praise of the Standard Prime Lens - PhotoblogsWiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
A standard prime lens is the lens that is supposed to view the world most like the human eye.
The standard prime lens fell out of favor with photogs in the 80's with the availability of cheap, standard zoom lenses, however, there are still a lot of advantages to the standard prime lens:
The standard lens is versatile - although a slight compromise for portrait or landscape work, the standard prime lens is still very usable in either situation.

Prime lens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In film and photography, a prime lens is a photographic lens whose focal length is fixed, as opposed to a zoom lens, which has a variable focal length.
Prime lenses are not as versatile as their zoom counterparts, but are often of superior optical quality and lower cost.
In the early motion picture days the term prime was referring to the primary lens attached to the camera, as opposed to converter lenses, and without regard to whether it is fixed or variable focal length.

First, the prime lens which is on the camera, and second, the reversed lens.
If the prime lens of a digital camera at maximum digital zoom is assumed to be at 150mm, and the reversed lens is a fixed 50mm then 150mm/50mm = magnification +3.
The closer the lens is moved to the subject, the less light you will have for viewing and exposure.

Testing Minolta's 24-105mm f/3.5~4.5 (D) zoom lens.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The purpose of this experiment is to test how good is the Minolta Maxxum 24-105mm f/3.5~4.5 (D) zoom is. I have compared the zoom to other Minolta prime lenses, specifically the 35mm f/2.0 RS, the 50mm f/1.4 RS and the 100mm f/2.8 macro (D).
The zoom lens is not as good as the prime lenses but it is darn close in sharpness specially at f/8.0.
The center sharpness was better than the corner sharpness for the zoom lens, however, for the prime lenses the center and corner sharpness was comparable.

Difference Between Zoom and Prime Lenses - Photography Tips
Prime lenses are cheaper - zoom lenses are fairly complicated, while prime lenses have been around since the introduction of the 35mm SLR film camera.
With a prime lens you have to physically move your body if you want to change your angle of view.
Stick a prime lens on your SLR camera (borrow one from a friend if you have to) and leave it there for an entire week.

noob question: why is it called a PRIME lens? - Canon Digital Photography Forums   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Prime lenses originally meant those lenses that were could be used on their own with camera bodies, as opposed to 'other' lenses that won't work by themselves and need to be conneted to a 'prime' lens, in effect changing the optical charateristics of the lens.
In this regard, a 'prime' lens before could mean a single focal length lens or a zoom lens, as opposed to the 'other' lenses which could be teleconverters or wide angle attachments.
In recent years though, the term 'prime lenses' have evolved to mean single focal lenses, as opposed to zoom lenses.

Lightweight and affordable, this sharp lens with a fast f/1.8 aperture is an excellent first lens for those who prefer a fixed focal length, and makes an excellent addition to any photographer’s system for available-light shooting.
A medium telephoto lens with a large aperture brings the subject closer, creates excellent background blur, gives a longer flash range, and affords a faster shutter speed to freeze the action.
A standard zoom lens, with its natural angle of view and perspective, captures the subject plainly, with no special effects.

A prime lens is a lens in which the field of view (focal length) cannot be adjusted.
The EF-S 18-55 is no L series lens by a long shot, but it offers surprisingly decent optical quality for the incredibly low price, and it’s the only affordable way to get down to moderately wide angles (roughly the same as a 29mm lens on a 35mm film camera) on the 300D.
At least one element in every L lens is either made of fluorite crystal rather than glass, is a ground aspheric lens element (not a moulded/replicated aspheric lens as used in less expensive lenses) or is made from ultra-low dispersion glass.

A prime lens is a lens with a fixed focal length.
A 50mm lens is roughly equivalent to what you see with the eye, a 24mm lens takes in a wider field of view (wide-angle), and a 100mm lens a much narrower field of view (telephoto).

The front element of the Ultra Prime 8R is a radically shaped aspherical lens element that is produced using semiconductor technology, resulting in high optical quality while substantially reducing size and weight.
In fact, the Ultra Prime 8R is smaller than the 10 or 12 mm Ultra Primes - a revolutionary size for an 8 mm lens - and weighs only 2/3rds of the 10 mm weight.
It gives the cinematographer ample room to place lights when working close to the actors and allows the lens to skim past objects that are very close to the optical axis for shots that were not possible before.

50mm or 35mm as prime lens on D50 - Digital Camera Resource Page - Forums
If you want to decide which fixed focal length lens to buy later you can set the kit lens at 28mm, 35mm, or 50mm and decide which focal length would better fit your specialty needs, or whether all 3 should be in your collection.
On the other hand, the 18-55mm DX lens is such a bargain when bundled with the kit; starting off with just a prime lens might be unnecessarily "hair-shirt".
The lens is pretty minimalist as far as markings (as you might expect from a $150 lens) but it does have focal length markings.

Using prime lenses is a great way to train yourself to see the world photographically.
I would go so far as to say that learning photography with a zoom lens is a significant barrier to developing an unconscious competency in seeing pictures.
You can’t engage a subject with a zoom lens without going through that conscious crop thing by zooming and zigging the lens in and out.

I tend to agree with wkcheah's points....the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 is a newer version of its 300/3.8 brother, with HSM and presumably faster AF too, it is a critically acclaimed lens which has given good results, some of the birders here have used it before, including our own harlequin, wkcheah76 and now wilis128.
Of course if you can afford it go for the Canon 300mm f2.8 (IS or non IS), combine with the 2 mk II TCs and your 20D you are looking at a potential lethal combo with great reach and speed, joeyao is using this combo to great effect now.
The Sigma 500mm f4.5 is also a good lens, tho you lose AF when you stack a 1.4x TC on it.
