Like most of the other early Roman bishops he is celebrated as a martyr in the martyrologies, but the fact of his martyrdom rests upon a very late and worthless tradition.
1 he says that Alexander of Rome and Primus of Alexandria became bishops at the same time; but according to this chapter, Alexander died at the close of the tenth year of his episcopate, and Primus in the twelfth year of his.
If Primus died in the twelfth year of his episcopate, as Eusebius says in this chapter, and entered upon his office in the twelfth year of Trajan, as he says in chapter 1, Justus must have become bishop about 120 a.d., in the third or fourth year of Hadrian.

It is the last one that particularly interests me, since the only fragments of Secret Mark are quotations in a letter of Clement of Alexandria copied onto the endpapers of a book discovered by Morton Smith in 1958 at the monastery of Mar Saba.
In fact, the first-fruits of my published research into Biblical Studies, "Clement of Alexandria on the 'Order' of the Gospels," New Testament Studies 47 (2001): 118-25, dealt with a quotation from Clement's Hypotyposeis on the origin of the gospels.
I would characterize my approach to Biblical Studies as philological, concentrating mainly on the texts of the New Testament, what they mean, who wrote them and when, how they came about, how they were collected, and how they transmitted down to us.
