	Mountbatten - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		On 14 July 1917, Prince Louis of Battenberg assumed the surname Mountbatten (a literal translation of the German Battenberg) for himself and his descendants, and was created Marquess of Milford Haven.
		The sons of Princess Beatrice and Louis's brother, Prince Henry of Battenberg — Prince Alexander and Prince Leopold — also took the new surname, with Alexander being made Marquess of Carisbrooke.
		The best-known of Prince Louis I's descendants were his youngest son, Admiral Prince Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, and Burma's nephew Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (husband of Queen Elizabeth II), son of Prince Louis I's' daughter Princess Alice of Battenberg.

		On 22 February, 1879, the first Bulgarian assembly of notables convened in the principality; on 28 April the new constitution was signed; and on 29 April Prince Alexander of Battenberg was chosen as sovereign by the first national assembly.
		The unexpected independence which Alexander had shown in the face of Russia, brought him into disfavour with that power, and a military conspiracy, secretly supported by Russia, was successful in having him transported across the frontier (20 August, 1886).
		The Sultan then recognized Ferdinand as prince and governor-general, in view of the fact that Ferdinand had his son Boris, heir to the throne, baptized in the Greek orthodox faith (1896).
