The Monastery was founded in 1282 by the son of Alexander Nevsky, Prince Daniil Alexandrovich who was the Prince of Moscow from 1276-1303, and founder of the Rurik Dynasty.
Daniil was cannonized in 1652 and the monastery was renamed in his honor.

In 1489, the prince and his army of 64,000 men besieged and captured the city of Khlynov, the inhabitants of which had often pillaged the northern lands of Russia.
In 1493, Shchenya and his relative Prince Vasili Ivanovich Patrikeyev (also known as Vassian Kosoy) captured the city of Vyazma and transferred its princes to Moscow.
In 1499, under the leadership of Prince Daniil Kholmsky, Shchenya defeated the Grand Hetman of Lithuania Konstantin Ostrozhsky at the Battle of Vedrosha and took him prisoner.

In the 30th of the XIII century the polish prince Kondrat Mazowiecki tried to enter into a coalition with the Teutonic Order, to defend himself from Volyn and Lithuania, and among Daniil’s supporters was the ruler of Navagradak Izyeslav (Yazyeslav), who’s name is not mentioned again in the chronicle.
The intension of Daniil to take possession of Navagradak resulted in the campaigns of 1252, 1253 and 1255 and were aimed at severing the centre of the Navagradak district from Lithuania, which under the rule of Mindovg, penetrated there somewhat earlier.
It is interesting to note that the author considers the history of Mindovg and other Lithuanian princes as imbued with enlightenment and could have been subject to a separate chronicle written in one of the orthodox monasteries along the Nioman, possibly in the one founded by Prince Voishelk in the land of Navagradak.

Various semi-independent princes still claimed specific territories, but Ivan III forced the lesser princes to acknowledge the grand prince of Muscovy and his descendants as unquestioned rulers with control over military, judicial, and foreign affairs.

It was fought as part of the Russo-Lithuanian Wars on July 14, 1500, some 50 km to the west of Kaluga, between joint forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Kingdom of Poland under command of Prince Konstantin Ostrozhsky and the Muscovite army under Prince Daniil Shchenya.
Some 8,000 Lithuanians were killed, and many more were taken prisoner, including Prince Ostrozhsky, the first ever Grand Hetman of Lithuania, himself.
Upon his release, Prince Ostroghsky made several attempts to retaliate, but his brilliant victory at Orsha (1514) didn't entail any political consequences.
