From this point in history, all shogun that headed shogunates were by tradition descendants of the Minamoto princes, the sons of emperor Seiwa, and the title passed generation to generation to the eldest sons.
Prince Moriyoshi (also known as Prince Morinaga), son of Emperor Go-Daigo was awarded the title of Seii Taishogun and put in charge of the military.
After Ashikaga Takauji, later founder of the Muromachi shogunate, rebelled against the emperor, Prince Moriyoshi was put under house arrest and killed in 1335 by Takauji's younger brother Ashikaga Tadayoshi.

Emperor Go-Daigo's ideal was the Engi era (901-923) during the reign of Emperor Daigo, a period of direct imperial rule.
Go-Daigo escaped from the capital, the Sacred Treasures that he had handed over to the Ashikaga being counterfeit, and set up the Southern Court among the mountains of Yoshino, beginning the Period of Northern and Southern Courts in which the Northern Dynasty in Kyōto and the Southern Dynasty in Yoshino faced off against each other.
Emperor Go-Daigo ordered Imperial Prince Kaneyoshi to Kyūshū and Nitta Yoshisada and Imperial Prince Tsuneyoshi to Hokuriku, and so forth, dispatching his sons all over, so that they could oppose the Northern Court.

For a brief period, Emperor Godaigo succeeded in gaining the imperial rule, but was soon defeated by Ashikaga troops.
Captured during this conflict, Prince Morinaga was brought to Kamakura and put under house arrest by the Ashikaga, and he was eventually executed by beheading.
After rising to power in 1868, Emperor Meiji ordered the establishment of a shrine in homage to the Prince, which is now the Kamakuragu Shrine.

Now the declared aim is to promote 'laughter, peace and international communion' through Shoten, this year to be held on the 29th of May. As an important element of the festival I am organising a 'One Verse Contest' to be held in the tradition of haikai-no-renga.
The top ten entries will be recited in front of the Prince's spirit on the Festival Day.
