Prince William was formed in 1730 and named by the General Assembly after the second son of George II.
Prince William was made the Duke of Cumberland in 1726 when he was five years old, so he was all of nine years old when honored by the name of the new county.
Prince William's military reputation was destroyed in one of the maneuverings during what the Virginians referred to as the French and Indian War.

New counties were created as the English population grew, and the native American population in an area was simultaneously reduced.
However, he died before Prince William County was created by the colonial General Assembly - 45 years before the American Revolution - and named for the second son of King George II.
Prince William was carved mostly from the western edge of Stafford County, but the area in the Rappahannock River watershed (now in Fauquier county) was "contributed" by King George county.

Prince William County has created a strategic plan in which preservation goals focus on the preservation of county-owned structures and their use for public and heritage tourism purposes.
The county, in cooperation with the Alliance for Revitalization of the Courthouse, the City of Manassas, and the Commonwealth of Virginia, also completed the rehabilitation of the 1893 courthouse, which had been abandoned for more than 15 years.
The county is an active member of the Civil War Trails program and is also collaborating with private developers to preserve historic properties, including a one-room schoolhouse for African-American children and the core area of the Bristow Station Battlefield, soon to become a heritage park.

Prince William County was formed on 25 March 1731 from the upper portions of King George and Stafford counties.
Although the first patent of land in Prince William dates from 1653, few settlers chose to settle in the area of the county until the early 1700s, because the region was the scene of the bloodiest fighting and slaughters in the Indian wars which continued throughout the seventeenth century.
Many of Prince William's records were destroyed in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and some deed and bond books were stolen by Federal occupation troops.

Note: We are in the midst of mapping the Stafford, Prince William and Fauquier lands, and it now appears that the Combs owned land in all three counties, but land that was very close, regardless of county (i.e., at the juncture of the three counties).
