Topic: Prince of Foxes

Fox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The presence of foxes all over the globe has led to their appearance in the popular culture and folklore of many nations, tribes, and other cultural groups.
Male foxes are known as dogs or tods, females are referred to as vixens, and their young are called kits or cubs, as well as pups.
In many cultures, the fox is a familiar animal of folklore, a symbol of cunning and trickery.

Cesare Borgia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Machiavelli used many of his exploits and tactics as examples in The Prince.
A few scholars, however, have argued that Machiavelli's praise for Borgia was a parody, to cover up the actual anti-hero of the work, Ferdinand II of Aragon.

A member of the newsgroup has given us all the joy of experiencing the foxes on her farm through her nearly daily accounts.
Cradled in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and well known as the inspiration for Lucy Maud Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables", Prince Edward Island (PEI) is also the birthplace of Canada's confederation.
Red foxes, or vulpes vulpes are they are technically named, are called the catlike canine and show a surprising personality and physical resemblance to both species.

Alfred NEWMAN Prince of Foxes : Film Music on the Web CD Reviews Oct 1999   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Prince of Foxes is set in the Italy of the Borgias.
It concerns the dark machinations of the power hungry Cesare Borgia (Orson Welles) who despatches one of his officers (Tyrone Power) to assassinate a rival lord; but the officer succumbs to the charms of a pretty royal, (the ineffectual Wanda Hendrix), and to love and honour.
For Prince of Foxes, Newman created one of his most trenchant scores.

Film Score Monthly's "Golden Age Classics" - Newman and Waxman
Prince Valiant, which I have never seen, is by all accounts a much inferior vehicle to Star Wars, or E.T., or Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In the case of Foxes, that is merely the most brilliant film score of Newman's vast and dazzling canon.
Similarly, Tyrone Power, who definitely dripped with decadence as Andrea Orsini, the not-so-princely fox of the title, is made sympathetic even before his "conversion" by the headlong heroism of the title theme, and even more so later simply by appearing in nearly every scene with Newman/Madonna Camilla.

Throughout the 1940s, Newman scored The Mark of Zorro, Son of Fury, The Black Swan, Prince of Foxes and Captain from Castile.
In this second Golden Age Classics release from Film Score Monthly, that half-century of neglect is at last being addressed with the release of all surviving tracks from Prince of Foxes (1949), and in bracing stereophonic sound.
In addition to rare stills from Fox archives, Bill Whitaker's liner notes include a history of the film, a look at Newman's role overseeing Fox's remarkable music department, an analysis of the score and a definitive explanation of how stereo tracks for this and other Fox soundtracks came to be in the 1940s.

Feist's novels have always relied on plot rather than narrative, but the prose in "King of Foxes" rings particularly wooden, and none of the new settings such as Opardum feel as real as the grit of Krondor in past novels.
King of Foxes continues the story of Talon, and thus Feist writes in the same way as he did in the first book.
Some of the bits that were delightfully eccentric in the first book (such as starting each chapter with one sentence along the lines of "Talon stared") become increasingly annoying in the second book, as Feist doesn't keep them consistent.

 Newman: Prince of Foxes
The most famous swashbuckling adventure scores in Hollywood history are those by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, such as The Sea Hawk and The Adventures of Robin Hood; immensely good though they are, equally satisfying are those by Alfred Newman, such as Prince of Foxes, which offers just as much dramatic and compositional depth.
Legendarily, Newman managed to coax a sound out of his string section unlike any other ever heard under any conductor, and this is just as notable in Prince of Foxes as in Newman's countless other scores.
Prince of Foxes is an extraordinary score written by a compositional genius, and the godfather of film music; you owe it to yourself to buy this remarkable score.

Wuthering Heights - Music from the Movies
Six films are represented - four of them making their debut on disc - Wuthering Heights, Prince Of Foxes, David And Bathsheba, Dragonwyck, Prisoner Of Zenda and Brigham Young.
The highlight of the album is Prince Of Foxes (1949), a swashbuckler set in Italy at the time of the Borgias.
Easily discerned is his main march theme, which was used over the titles of many Fox westerns in the forties.

Main fare, however, are the substantial suites from Wuthering Heights (1939) and Prince of Foxes (1949).
However, any treatment of Foxes will stand or stumble by its handling of the transcendent Camilla theme and the noble meditation for her husband Varsano.
The lovely Cathy theme has found a life of its own apart from the original soundtrack, but these two themes from Foxes are equally exalted: Cathy, somehow redolent of both passion and agony, contrasts markedly with the serene Camilla, which never lights on solid earth.

It seems as though swashbuckling, adventure, and intrigue, reached their all time highs in the Renaissance Italy of Samuel Shellabarger's novel, The Prince of Foxes.
And so....."To a clatter of hoofs on the drawbridge, a ruffle of drums, a flourish of trumpets, a grounding of halberds....." I'll leave you to the Prince of Foxes.
Not only is it the site where Tosca jumps to her death in the opera, but it's the setting for the very atmospheric scene in "Prince of Foxes" where Andrea goes to the secret audience with Borgia and is worried about being assasinated.

3/24/98: Wuthering Heights: Alfred Newman Review
Yet, all this duly acknowledged and lamented upon, this is a valuable and much needed CD in that it brings back into a wider awareness six dazzling displays of musical virtuosity from the pen of Alfred Newman.
It was the musical equivalent of a shot of adrenaline kicking in, and in westerns such as YELLOW SKY ('48) and RAWHIDE ('51) it literally pulled you toward the screen and into the on-going action.
On film in PRINCE OF FOXES, Newman introduces the sublime "Camillia" theme by having it sung by an anonymous Venetian gondolier across a mist-shrouded lagoon, using it thereafter to underscore the Wanda Hendrix heroine.

Prince Of Foxes - Music from the Movies
From the vaults of Twentieth Century Fox comes a lovely, lovely score from the pen of the great Alfred Newman.
Considered a follow up to the justly famous Captain From Castille, which benefited from an excellent score by Alfred Newman as well, this is a lesser known, yet just a melodic and exciting, which comes as no surprise whatsoever considering who wrote it.

Filmed entirely on location in Italy, Prince of Foxes is a cinemadaptation of Samuel Shellabarger's popular novel.
Set during the Renaissance, the film stars Tyrone Power as Orsini, a good-will ambassador for scheming, covetous Cesare Borgia (Orson Welles).
Because of contractual and budgetary restrictions, Prince of Foxes had to be filmed in fl-and-white, which is a shame; if ever a film cried out for Technicolor, it is this one (20th Century-Fox soon rectified this artistic gaffe with its full-color, location-filmed The Black Rose [1950], which also starred Tyrone Power and Orson Welles).
