In 1966 when the government approved the construction of the university’s first building at Rusamilae Village, Muang District of Pattani Province, the university was originally named “University of South Thailand”, and later the same year, His Majesty the King bestowed the name “Prince of Songkla University” – after his father.
Prince of Songkla, originally, Prince Mahidol, is widely known locally in Thailand as the “Father of Modern Thai Medicine”.
In 1927, the Prince was operated on for appendicitis and in 1927 was suffered a severe liver disease, later in the year, on September 24, passed away at the age of 36.

Prince of Songkla University (PSU) was fortunate enough to suffer no casualty from the tsunami.
Soon after the tsunami struck on 26th December 2004, early of 27th December Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai Campus sent 5 of ten-person teams consisted of medical doctors, nurses and other personnel to the hospitals and medical centers near the disaster areas.
The university also coordinated with the government departments concerned to help speed up the issuing of passports and/or travel documents for the patients and relatives who wanted to return to their home countries.

This study aimed to examine the quality of diagnosis and treatment decisions on occlusal caries among dental teachers in 5 universities : Mahidol, Chulalongkorn, Chiengmai, Khon-Kaen and Prince of Songkla.
Ten observers from each university examined the teeth first visually then combined visually and radiographically according to 0-5 point severity scale ranging from sound to caries in the inner dentin.
The percentage of clinically correct treatment decisions were 92 % for deep dentin lesions, 47.4 % for enamel lesions and 20 % for outer dentin lesions.

 OSU Professor Will Help Peace Institute in Thailand
Hynson, a professor of sociology, is currently in Thailand as a Fulbright Senior Specialist, setting up the curriculum for a new master's of peace studies degree at the Prince of Songkla University.
The university is in the southern part of Thailand, a country struggling with the growing pains of modernizing its economy.
Hynson holds a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee and is an applied/clinical sociologist.

These were three district hospitals of Chana, Ratterphum and Ranode; the provincial hospital of Songkla; the regional hospital of Hat Yai; and the Prince of Songkla University Hospital in Hat Yai.
