The story of the opera is driven by the love of Prince Hilarion for Princess Ida, daughter of King Gama, to whom he had been married in babyhood.
The Princess, however, is absorbed by her ideals and responsibilities as head of a women's college which endeavors to educate women to be the ruling sex.
The princess is ultimately unsuccessful in her noble aims, and in the end surrenders to her prince.

 Princess Ida Review 1
The Princess Ida is represented by Miss Colbourne-Baber, a young lady already known to the operatic stage in Melbourne, and who has many qualifications to do justice to this important rôle.
The whole width of the stage is thrown open, terraced battlements and splendid towers fill the background, the Princess and all her ladies appear encased in glittering silver, and the throb and hum of martial music fills the air.
The fortune of war favours King Hildebrand and Hilarion, and then the Princess is convinced that it is her duty to fulfil her vow of betrothal.

Princess Ida is not truly a satire of women's education.
This issue is at the heart of Princess Ida and of Tennyson's poem: not the question of women's education, but the problem of balance in relationships between the sexes.
In the case of Ida the castle becomes a fort, King Hildebrand, his son and court become a U.S. Cavalry outpost, and Princess Ida, her father and brothers come from Mexico.

 Recordings of Princess Ida
Princess Ida has suffered somewhat in the recording studio.
It was made just after the opera was revived in London for the first time, it is one of Henry Lytton's few recordings, and it is only one to include "Come, mighty must." There are three recent CD re-issues.
Elizabeth Harwood's Ida, though miles ahead of Victoria Sladen's in 1955, still leaves much to be desired, and Sir Malcolm Sargent's tempi are almost comically slow in patches.

"Princess Ida" from the completeness and general effectiveness of its presentation, will be remembered amongst the many treats which this enterprising firm has provided the New Zealand public with, and their efforts to cater for people's amusement, so regardless of expense, deserve the fullest measure of support that can be accorded to them.
In "Princess Ida," more than any in any other opera-bouffe which has yet been presented here, the dialogue is both witty and interesting, and in this respect the libretto is immeasurably superior to any of its predecessors.
If "Princess Ida" gets its deserts, bumper houses may be anticipated during the remainder of the week.

Valley Light Opera -- Princess Ida 1995
Princess Ida holds a special place in my heart, as it is the first GandS piece in which I was ever involved, either on or off the stage.
Our play opens with members of King Hildebrand's court anxiously awaiting the arrival of Princess Ida, who was betrothed to Hildebrand's son Hilarion "at the extremely early age of one." Ida's three brothers and her father (King Gama) arrive, but, alas, with no Princess.
Gama "arrives" to plead with her: pit her brothers against Hilarion and his friends, and "on the issue let [her] hand depend." Ida consents to the arrangement, Hilarion and friends emerge victorious, Ida falls madly in love, and--as is to be expected in a GandS opera--just about everyone ends up happy.

BBC - Oxford Stage - Princess Ida Review
When Gilbert and Sullivan composed Princess Ida they obviously had women's lib in mind, although in 1884, when it was first performed, women didn't even have the right to vote.
The operetta, performed by Banbury Operatic Society, shows extremes of characterisation - from the princess's father, distorted in both mind and body, to the feisty princess, unwilling to compromise her principles of feminine independence, to the lovesick prince Hilarion.
Ann Sloan playing Princess Ida gave a spirited performance matched by a clear, strong voice.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s musical comedy Princess Ida was composed in 1884 at a time when the suffragette movement in Victorian England was beginning to gain prominence.
The "women’s lib" storyline is set in medieval times when kings and castles abounded and warring between neighbours was a constant way of life.
Unfortunately, for political reasons Ida, as a baby, had been married to the infant prince of a neighbouring kingdom with the understanding that at the age of 21 she would join him as his wife.
