 MV Princess Victoria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The MV Princess Victoria sank on 31 January 1953 in the North Channel.
The sinking of Princess Victoria occurred during a severe European windstorm which also caused the North Sea Flood of 1953, claiming 531 fatalities in the UK alone, although this was the worst single incident in that storm.
In 2003, on the 50th anniversary, a plaque commemorating the sinking was unveiled in Stranraer.

On the morning of the 31st of January 1953 the Princess Victoria was berthed at Stranraer's railway pier loading for her morning crossing to Larne.
By 0850 the Princess Victoria was passing Milleur buoy at the northern end of Loch Ryan and was moving into the dangerous unsheltered waters of the North Channel.
With this course the Princess Victoria continued taking the heavy seas on the bow but she was eventually turned west for Larne and this exposed the car deck doors to more of the heavy sea.

A NEW book about the tragic loss of the car ferry Princess Victoria while travelling from Stranraer to Larne almost 50 years ago recalls three local people who were on board when she set out on what was to be her final voyage.
Her progress up Loch Ryan was slowed by the heavy weather and it took about an hour to reach the open sea where the storm had strengthened to produce waves well in excess of 45 feet.
He was close to the bridge and heard Captain Ferguson shout that if the Princess Victoria had to be abandoned every_ one was to try to get into either a lifeboat or a raft.

However, fifty years ago Ulster was associated with another important maritime disaster when the Princess Victoria, a pioneer ro-ro ferry, foundered off Belfast Lough after its car deck had become flooded on its way from Stranraer to Larne in January 1953.
The disaster has particularly strong associations with Stranraer, where many of the crew were based, and with Northern Ireland, which accounted for the bulk of the passengers.
