Still, many schools will make the best of it, issuing press releases to tout their rank as one of the top 10 law schools for tax law or trial advocacy or dispute resolution.
She was devastated last year when her school slipped from the third to the fourth tier (only the top 50 schools are assigned a numerical rank), and she wrote about it in the school’s student newspaper.
The vast majority of law schools accredited within the past 30 years are clustered in the third and fourth tiers.

Top law schools tend to offer outstanding physical facilities, extensive library resources, gifted classmates and professors, and employment contacts with recruiters who have strong and often long-standing contacts with the school.
While rankings are useful in getting a feel for the school's reputation or academic climate, I have had students in my office explaining that they are going to a school ranked 12th instead of one ranked 14th because the 12th ranked school “is better.” That is nonsense.
By the time law school graduation rolls around, US News and World Report will likely have shifted a variable in an attempt to make the rankings more accurate or less controversial, and schools may very well switch positions for no reason other than a re-weighting of a measuring variable.

The number of law schools to which you should apply depends on your chances of being accepted at the schools in which you are most interested.
Lawyers, law school alumni, etc., are generally only useful if they are well known to the school (major donors?) or if they are especially distinguished or accomplished in some way and know you well enough to write a meaningful recommendation.

The reference to the law school rang a faint bell — PAW had touched on it in a story in May 2000 — but after considering the topic for this column, I decided against it, assuming no one else would be interested in the history of Princeton’s failed legal experiment.
Princeton’s law school, housed in Notman’s building on Mercer Street, opened in 1847 during the university’s centennial celebration.
Even then-dean of the Woodrow Wilson School Donald Stokes ’51, who was on the committee and might have been expected to favor the new program, told PAW, “There’s a healthy puzzle as to the sources of the current interest in the law school and as to whether some of those sources might dry up.”

 Dartmouth Law School?
Despite the defense of Daniel Webster, the 1875 bequest of Judge Joel Parker to establish a law school, and the current activity of a legal society, law journal, and lawyers' association, there is no law school at Dartmouth College.
On December 21, 2004, the University of Massachusetts trustees voted to acquire a small, unaccredited, private law school called the Southern New England School of Law and turn it into the public law school of Massachusetts.
The school is less than three miles from UMass Dartmouth, the undergraduate campus with which it will be associated.
