Topic: Principal Galaxies Catalogue

Principal Galaxies Catalogue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Principal Galaxies Catalogue (PGC) is an astronomical catalogue that contains all available primary information for each of the known galaxies: morphological type, major and minor axes, magnitude, radial velocity and position angle.

 Introduction to Survey Results
Because of such a lack of previous attention the majority of the IC identified galaxies have not been examined since they were originally discovered between the years 1888 and 1908 and therefore it has not been clearly established whether all such identities are valid as nonstellar objects.
Indeed even for the relatively few IC galaxy identities found in many of the modern catalogues the diversity of opinions as to their character or type is extensive, some catalogues listing a particular IC identity as being a galaxy while another catalogue describes this same identity as being a single or double star.
Each of these prints were examined for every IC identified galaxy contained within their 6.5 X 6.5 degrees of field and the results compared with the historical and modern identity data.

A new catalogue of ISM content of normal galaxies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
We have compiled a catalogue of the gas content for a sample of 1916 galaxies, considered to be a fair representation of "normality".
The definition of a "normal" galaxy adopted in this work implies that we have purposely excluded from the catalogue galaxies having distorted morphology (such as interaction bridges, tails or lopsidedness) and/or any signature of peculiar kinematics (such as polar rings, counterrotating disks or other decoupled components).
Our catalogue significantly improves the statistics of previous reference catalogues and can be used in future studies to define a template ISM content for "normal" galaxies along the Hubble sequence.

Galaxy data were divided into several magnitude limited samples.
To construct maps of the galaxy distribution suitable for further analysis, we have used the Catalogue of Principal Galaxies, hereinafter, PGC described by Paturel et al.
A summary of the relevant data on the galaxy samples is given in Table 1.

In this paper, criteria for group membership are discussed and data are presented for 79 galaxies identified with the group.
As has been seen previously, the galaxies with the reddest global colors are reddest at the centers and get bluer at large radii.
However, curiously, among the galaxies with the bluest global colors there are systems with very blue cores that get redder at large radii.

If this were the only cause of the expansion, the distance to a galaxy would be merely the velocity at which a galaxy moves away from us divided by a constant called the Hubble constant.
In a cluster of galaxies, the central galaxies are on orbits around the center with periods of around a billion years and galaxies farther out may be falling in.
In the set of 19 990 galaxies in the catalog which have measured radial velocities, there are many clusters of galaxies like the Virgo cluster.

 distances of nearby galaxies-- ReadMe
This compilation was primarily intended as a tool for the author's work on grouping of nearby galaxies; at these very nearby distances the Hubble flow is not completely reliable as a yardstick, so the galaxy distances have to be inserted "by hand" in every sample.
This table originates from the merging of two recent catalogues of nearby galaxy distances: Karachentsev et al, "A catalogue of neighboring galaxies", 2004, AJ, 127, 2031 and Whiting, "Light and motion in the local volume", astro-ph/0412090.
For each galaxy are given its name, or names, and its position in the equinox J2000; these data are given once, at the first record for that galaxy.

However, in difference to Antlia, this galaxy is probably located beyond the borders of the Local Group, and also not gravitationally bound, thus a nearby non-member galaxy.

In a correlation study of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalogue (RASS-BSC) with the Catalogue of Principal Galaxies (PGC) 904 X-ray sources were found that possess possible extragalactic counterparts within a search radius of 100arcsec.
Although for the other sources no hints for activity were found in the literature, 69% of those for which we have distances show X-ray luminosities exceeding those of normal galaxies, a clear sign that these galaxies also own hitherto unreported X-ray active components.
Two special source samples are defined, one with candidates for X-ray emission from hitherto unknown groups or clusters of galaxies, and one with high X-ray luminosity sources, that are likely candidates to possess hitherto unreported active galactic nuclei.
