The karst region is separated by the Zeta River and its plain from the higher, largely mountainous regions of the rest of the western and southern sections of the country.
The mountainous principality continued to resist the Turks, but by 1499 most of Montenegro was held by the Turks, while Venice held the port of Kotor and the Montenegrin princes ruled their remnant stronghold from Cetinje.
The northeast, in Serbia, is part of the fertile Danubian plain and is traversed by the Danube and its tributaries—the Drava, the Sava, the Morava, the Timok, and the Tisza (Serbian Tisa).

In the eleventh century, one of the centres of Serb political life was the Principality of Duklja, which spread around Lake Scutari and the valley of the River Zeta.
So, Zeta as well (although it was reduced in size because part of it was held by the Venetians) came to be part of the Serbian state, thus ending a long period of fragmentation.
The lands of the Serbian despots stretched from the Sava and Danube down to Sar- planina and Lake Scutari, and they were centralized in the north: Belgrade was the capital during the reign of Stefan Lazarevic, and Smederevo during the reign of Djuradj Brankovic (1427-1456).

 History Of Montenegro
Formerly tributary to the Byzantine Empire and the later medieval Serbian kingdom, the independent principality of Zeta (now Montenegro) asserted itself towards 1360.
Never fully conquered by the Ottoman Empire which controlled the lands to the south and east since the 15th century, Montenegro in 1516 came under the rule of the prince-bishop (vladika) of Cetinje, a position held from 1697 by the Petrović-Njeguš family of the Riđani clan.
As a matter of trivia, the term Montenegro derives from the Venetian "black mountain", the black appearance of Mount Lovcen's pine forests inspiring early Venetian conquerors.
