Principles and parameters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Principles and parameters was largely formulated by the linguists Noam Chomsky and Howard Lasnik, though it was the culmination of the research of many linguists.
A finite set of parameters that determine syntactic variability amongst languages; e.g., a binary parameter that determines whether or not the subject of a sentence must be overtly pronounced (this example is sometimes referred to as the Pro-drop parameter).
Another source of criticism is the binary nature of parameters in the framework.

Noam Chomsky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Hence the term principles and parameters, often given to this approach.) In this view, a child learning a language need only acquire the necessary lexical items (words, grammatical morphemes, and idioms), and determine the appropriate parameter settings, which can be done based on a few key examples.
His theory of a universal grammar was seen by many as a direct challenge to the established behaviorist theories of the time and had major consequences for understanding how language is learned by children and what, exactly, is the ability to use language.
Many of the more basic principles of this theory (though not necessarily the stronger claims made by the principles and parameters approach described above) are now generally accepted in some circles.

The Educational Task of Dordt College sets forth the principles that are to direct the institution in the performance of its educational task.
Principles guiding the resolution of conflict must be the recognition of proper areas of authority, determined by the specific task of the office-bearers involved, and the willingness to exercise authority in servanthood and stewardship.
At the same time they must agree that if, in the performance of their academic task, they find themselves departing from the stated goals and purposes of the college, they should be prepared for the reevaluation and possible termination of their appointment by the board of trustees.

Parsing of Principle-Based Grammars   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A grammar in a principles and parameters framework (called a principle-based grammar) consists of two things: (i) Principles define wellformedness conditions over syntactic structures; (ii) Parameters are used to specify principles in a language independent way.
In GB, for instance, there is a principle, called case filter, which requires that every overt noun phrase in a sentence structure is assigned case; it is parameterized for the syntactic categories that assign case, the direction of case assignment, and some other aspects of case assignment.
The intended purpose of the project was to demonstrate that implementing a parser in a principles and parameters framework is feasible.

You will be introduced to the Principles and Parameters theory of syntax proposed by Noam Chomsky in the 1980s and developed by linguists since then.
You would give the principles themselves and then compile your list of sentences (using the style used in the textbook and in class) that clearly illustrate how Principles A, B, and C apply in that language.
For each principle, parameter, or operation, in addition to the data you present, you will write a brief prose overview of that data you have analyzed.

 Grammatical Theory II
It is expected that the materials included in the review and subsequent discussion will be extensive enough to allow students who have not been exposed directly to Principles and Parameters Theory to understand it well enough to make the appropriate application with some guidance.
For students who have a background and interest in computer science, it could be highly useful to attempt to develop a computational model to carry out such tasks as those performed by the principles and parameters of the modules.
A tentative write-up of the basic structures of the language in question in terms of the modules and principles as discussed will form the basis for the grade in this course; a sketch following the example in Burquest (forthcoming) will be suitable as a beginning point, with specific details provided for each assignment.

 OUP: Principles and Parameters: Culicover
Principle and Parameters is a new textbook intended for the advanced undergraduate or postgraduate student of linguistics.
A major concern and organizing principle of the book is to give the student an understanding of how specific methodological assumptions underlie the core analyses that have played a central role in the development of the theory.
Each chapter is followed by an extensive set of exercises which lead the student from the point of applying the mechanics of the theory to developing and organizing new data, providing analyses, and exploring alternative hypotheses.

LinguaLinks Library Contents: A field guide for principles and parameters theory
This book is intended for students and field workers who wish to apply Principles and Parameters Theory (formerly known as Government and Binding Theory) to their initial work in previously unanalyzed languages.
Principles and Parameters Theory is based upon the fundamental assumption that all language are essentially alike in their core syntax, and equally subject to the constraints of the principles and parameters of Universal Grammar.
Appendices lay out a proposal by means of which morphology and certain characteristics of discourse structure can be integrated with the sentence-based Principles and Parameters.

To introduce students to modern syntactic theories, concentrating on the Principles and Parameters model of generative grammar.
This has been going through various metamorphoses for a number of decades, and the term 'Principles and parameters' model is intended to reflect work done in the late 80's and early 90's, from the Government and Binding era (Chomsky 1981) through to the recent Minimalist program (Chomsky 1995).

Parts II and III provide a theoretical analysis of the various syntactic constructions, utilizing a Principles and Parameters approach.
The final chapter demonstrates that the special quantifier constructions that mark number in the language exhibit the same basic principles and structures as the rest of the grammar, showing that a small number of principles or constraints can determine the full grammar of a language.

What counts is results: getting unemployed Canadians back to work; maximizing savings to the EI Account; and reducing dependency on income support programs generally.
Therefore the following principles and parameters should apply to the delivery and design of all active measures, whether by a provincial or territorial government or by the Government of Canada, and form the basis for mutually-agreeable accountability frameworks.
The accountability framework will be used to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of both the active measures and the NES functions; it will apply to whatever level of government delivers these activities.

Transformational Grammar: From Principles and Parameters to Minimalism
Together with a complete introduction to the principles of Universal Grammar, it traced the major shifts of perspective that have influenced the developments of the theory over the last forty years.
Covering the framework known as Principles and Parameters as well as the more recent framework known as Minimalism, it includes a range of new exercises, making it ideal for students at all levels."

The existence of these constructions thus reinforces the need for a syntactic theory to allow morphological elements and syntactic constructions to be represented, at least partly, in terms of the same theoretical devices.
An obvious way to do this within a 'Principles and Parameters' type of framework would be to identify both -uk/-un and und/hund as heads of similar functional projections so that configurationally the two examples (8a) and (8b) would look the same.
Indeed, the functional parallels Payne notes between the two constructions would be taken as strong motivation within such a framework that this was indeed the right way to proceed.
