  THE GRAND
Guests at Prinsenhof included: Prince William of Orange (1580); the Earl of Leicester (1586); Prince Maurice of Orange (1594); Maria de Medici, the widowed queen of France (1638); Louise Maria Gonzaga, queen of Poland (1645).
In 1597, Prinsenhof also became headquarters of the Amsterdam Admiralty, one of five boards set up in Dutch port cities to manage the maritime affairs of the republic.
Prinsenhof ceased to serve as lodgings for eminent guests in 1647 and was transferred in its entirety to the Admiralty in 1656.

Opposite the Oude Kerk of Delft, at Agathaplein 1, is a picturesque group of buildings, the Prinsenhof.
Built around 1400 as the nunnery of St Agatha, it was secularized after the Reformation and from 1575 was the residence of the Princes of Orange until Prince Maurice of Orange moved the seat of government to The Hague.
The Prinsenhof has tragic associations in the history of the Netherlands, for it was here that William the Silent was assassinated in 1584.

The Prinsenhof was the last residence of the William the Silent, the Prince of Orange, who was the leader of the independence movement in what became the Netherlands.
Just after securing independence from Spain, he was assassinated in the Prinsenhof on 10 July 1584; two bullet holes are behind glass in a wall at the bottom of the stairs from when he was shot.
On the second floor is a display of surgical instruments, a few wax anatomy models (including a fetus in a uterus) and four large paintings of human disections.

On one of our travels in India we took a photograph (as you do) of an articulated bus as we'd never seen one before and thought it a brilliant idea.
In 1997, as we were designing the hotel Prinsenhof website, we published this picture on the frontpage of the transportation pages just to add a bit of air and colour to the site.
