Computer printer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Today it is common to print everything (even plain text) by sending ready bitmapped images to the printer, because it allows better control over formatting.  Many printer drivers do not use the text mode at all, even if the printer is capable of it.
In either case, to print a line, precisely timed hammers strike against the back of the paper at the exact moment that the correct character to be printed is passing in front of the paper.

Patent 4074284: Ink supply system and print head
The print head 56 has a ceramic base plate 58 with a ceramic cover slip 60 thereover which is bonded to it to enclose a plurality of ink ejection chambers 62, in fluid communication with separate, corresponding nozzles 66 and necks 64.
As ink is ejected from the nozzles during printing, the capillary forces in the nozzles draw ink from the pulse trap chamber 68 to replace the ejected ink.
The head is easily removed from the printer by unplugging the edge connector 134 from the electrical connection lip 148 on the head 56, and withdrawing the head from the head receptacle and ink inlet needle 146.

 Patent 4101017: Matrix print head
The print needles co-operating with the electromagnets of the print heads are often bent, due to the mounting of the electromagnets, and must, therefore, run in elongated tubes or in a plurality of bearings in order that they shall not be broken or bent further and thereby cease to function.
The matrix print head is generally designated 2 in the Figures and comprises two housing halves 4 and 6 which constitute the outer limits for the print head and which includes holding and bearing elements for the different components of the print head.
The spring action of the print elements 104-116 is accomplished by bending the portions c and d, the cross section of which near the side portions b are less than their cross section near the side portions a, in order that the bending shall take place as far as possible from the side portions a.

Thermal printer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Direct thermal printers are increasingly replacing the dot matrix printer for printing cash register receipts, both because of the higher print speed and substantially quieter operation.
Until about 2000, most fax machines used direct thermal printing, though, now, only the cheapest models use it, the rest having switched to either thermal wax transfer, laser, or ink jet printing to allow plain-paper printouts.
Historically, direct thermal paper has suffered from such limitations as sensitivity to heat, abrasion (the coating can be fragile), friction (which can cause heat, thus darkening the paper), light (causing it to fade), and water.

PastePuck - The captive media print head system
The paste is stencil printed onto the bare board, components are carefully placed on the solder paste pads and the whole board is sent through a oven where the solder paste is reflowed to make lasting joints.
Printing solder paste has traditionally been a very wasteful process with some operations having to throw away up to 70% of the solder paste in order to maintain print quality.
The PastePuck is available in two print window sizes, 300mm and 380mm but each can be tailored to meet specific print pattern sizes with the use of Trim Tab Reducers that ensure optimum utilisation of the print medium.
