A U.S. comic strip syndicate will act as an agent for a cartoonist or comic strip creator, working to place the cartoon or strip in as many newspapers as possible on behalf of the artist.
A syndicate can receive upwards of 5000 submissions a year, from which only two or three will be selected for representation.

One of my favorite print strips is available on the web (usually about a week after it appears in your newspaper.) Rose is Rose is one of the best "family" strips in print.
