Computer printer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In addition, many modern printers can directly interface to electronic media such as memory sticks or memory cards, or to image capture devices such as digital cameras, scanners; some printers are combined with a scanners and/or fax machines in a single unit.
Virtually all modern inkjet printers are color devices; some, known as photo printers, include extra pigments to better reproduce the color gamut needed for high-quality photographic prints (and are additionally capable of printing on photographic card stock, as opposed to plain office paper).
These printers were referred to as letter-quality printers as during their heydey, they could produce text which was as clear and crisp as a typewriter (though they were nowhere near the quality of printing presses).

Laser Printer Encyclopedia @ TheEntireWeb.com (The Entire Web)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Laser printers employ a xerographic printing process but differ from most photocopiers in that the image is produced by the direct scanning of a laser beam across the printer's internal drum.
Laser printers use toner, a fl powder, rather than ink and do not require special paper, unlike thermal printers, whose images can be smeared if the paper comes in contact with a source of heat.
The first laser printer designed for use with an individual computer was released with the Xerox Star 8010 in 1977; however, although it was highly innovative, the Star was an expensive system that was only purchased by a small number of laboratories and institutions.

Inkjet printer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Inkjet printers are a type of computer printer that operates by propelling tiny droplets of liquid ink onto paper.
They are the most common type of computer printer for the general consumer due to their low cost, high quality of output, capability of printing in vivid color, and ease of use.
All Epson printers and most commercial and industrial ink jet printers use a piezoelectric crystal in each nozzle instead of a heating element.

Printer, a computerperipheral that puts text or a computer-generated image on paper or on another medium, such as a transparency.
Impact printers physically strike the paper and are exemplified by pin dot-matrix printers and daisy-wheel printers; nonimpact printers include every other type of print mechanism, including laser, ink-jet, and thermal printers.
Laser printers, while technically dot-matrix, are generally considered to produce fully formed characters because their output is very clear and the dots are extremely small and closely spaced.

 laser printer on Encyclopedia.com
LASER PRINTER [laser printer] a computer printer that produces high-resolution output by means of a process that is similar to photocopying.
In place of reflected light from an image (as is used in xerography), a laser printer uses data sent from a computer to turn a laser beam on and off rapidly as it scans a charged drum.
In a write-white printer, the beam negatively charges the areas not to be printed to repel the toner, which gives a denser image.
