Prinz Eugen was a Hipper class heavy cruiser: like her sister ships, Admiral Hipper and Blücher, she was built in the mid-1930s.
The port was regularly bombed by the RAF, and on the night on 1 July Prinz Eugen was hit on the port side behind the bridge.
Prinz Eugen was repaired at Gotenhafen (Gdynia) and continued her tasks of shelling Soviet land forces and evacuating German refugees.

Prinz Eugen was born in l663 in Paris, France, of the Italian House of Savoy.
In preparation for Operation White (Unternehmen Weiss), the Prinz Eugen SS Division was transferred by road and rail to the Karlovac-Zagreb area, from where it attacked east of Bihac with the launching of the Operation on January 8, l943.
