20th WCP: The Modernity of Aristotle’s Logical Investigations
Prior Analytics successfully established a formal deduction system that could serve as an instrument for demonstrative science, or apodeiktikê epistêmê, as this is outlined in Posterior Analytics.
Prior Analytics (esp. at A1-2, 4-7, 23, 45) is a proof-theoretic treatise in which Aristotle demonstrated certain of the logical relationships among syllogistic deduction rules.
This is especially evident at Prior Analytics B2-4 where he systematically treated the various possibilities of valid arguments with combinations of true and false sentences as premises and conclusions in the three figures.

Posterior Analytics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Posterior Analytics is a text from Aristotle's Organon which treats of demonstration and of knowledge.
In the Prior Analytics, syllogistic logic is considered in its formal aspect; in the Posterior it is considered in respect of its matter.
A syllogism which seems to be perfect both in matter and form, but which is not, is called sophistical, and these are dealt with in the book On Sophistical Refutations.

Organon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The system of logic described in two of these works, namely On Interpretation and the Prior Analytics, often called Aristotelian logic, is discussed in the article on term logic.
The order of the works is not chronological (which is now hard to determine), but was deliberately chosen by the Peripatetics to constitute a well-structured system; indeed some parts of them seem to be a scheme of a lecture on logic.
The Prior Analytics (Latin: Analytica Priora) introduces his syllogistic method, which is discussed in the article on term logic, argues for its correctness, and discusses inductive inference.

Prior Analytics Aristotle was principally concerned to treat argument patterns and not arguments in much the same way that a geometer treats triangles and parallelograms apart from a carpenter’s concern, for example, with this or that triangle, etc. 11

In his more mature Prior Analytics, Aristotle maintains the view that has come to be associated with the development of his traditional syllogistic.
He codifies this usage in the Prior Analytics (25b21): "'is' makes an affirmation always and in every case, whatever the terms to which it is added in predication, e.g.
This transition from potency to act is called predication, and the Prior Analytics is an extended effort to work out the details of this view.

In maintaining that Aristotle’s logic, Prior Analytics in particular, is concerned with substantive reasoning, I oppose the contemporary view that it is a formal science dealing with abstract syllogistic forms of argument, initiated by the great Polish logician Jan Lukasiewicz.
Aristotle begins Prior Analytics by asserting the aim of the inquiry is demonstration, implying that the study of the syllogism is the means toward that goal.
Aristotle illustrates it by a syllogism that concludes that the planets are near because they do not twinkle, when the fact that the planets do not twinkle is explained by their being near.

 Aristotle's Logic
In the Prior Analytics, Aristotle adopts a somewhat artificial way of expressing predications: instead of saying "X is predicated of Y" he says "X belongs (huparchei) to Y".
Aristotle rejects circular demonstration as an incoherent notion on the grounds that the premises of any demonstration must be prior (in an appropriate sense) to the conclusion, whereas a circular demonstration would make the same premises both prior and posterior to one another (and indeed every premise prior and posterior to itself).
In Prior Analytics I.31, he contrasts Division with the syllogistic method he has just presented, arguing that Division cannot actually prove anything but rather assumes the very thing it is supposed to be proving.

Offering a new interpretation of Aristotle's Analytics (the Prior and Posterior Analytics) as a unified whole, Patrick H. Byrne argues that a non-deductive form of ancient mathematical analysis influenced Aristotle's thinking.

Once the Prior Analytics reappeared in the West in the middle of the twelfth century, commentaries on it began appearing in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries.

Aristotle (W. D. Ross, ed. & commentary.) | Aristotle's Prior and Posterior Analytics. | Book #25684   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Aristotle's logical treatises could be said to have determined the course of logic and the philosophy of science for over 2,000 years.
The Prior Analytics aims to reveal the structure that Aristotle regarded as common to all reasoning--the syllogism--and to show its formal varieties irrespective of the subject matter of argument; while the Posterior Analytics studies how things should be defined--their basic explanatory features--in scientific reasoning.
This edition of the Analytics is the work of the foremost 20th century scholar of Aristotle, Sir David Ross, and follows the form of his editions of the Metaphysics and Physics.

Logic in Islamic philosophy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
One of the purposes of including a consideration of the tasawwur-tasdiq dichotomy in introductory discussions of the purpose of logic is to provide an epistemological foundation for the two focal points of Aristotelian logic, the definition and the syllogism (see Logical form §1).
However, since the definition and the syllogism are both considered in the Prior and Posterior Analytics and the works that come after them in the Organon, the study of the ways of producing conceptualization and assent presupposes as its foundation the study of single terms and propositions in the Categories and De interpretatione.
In the case of the theory of demonstration itself, Islamic logicians organized their commentaries on the Posterior Analytics around the definition and the demonstrative syllogism as the means by which both conceptualization and assent are most perfectly attained.

We must first state the subject of our inquiry and the faculty to which it belongs: its subject is demonstration and the faculty that carries it out demonstrative science.
