Priorat - Spanish Wine Region - Wine Tours Priorat, Spain
The remote, rocky hills of the Priorat wine region are the birthplace of intense, minerally reds that many wine writers and collectors consider to be Spain's most elite wines.
Priorat's best wines are concentrated and full of character thanks to the very low yields produced by the region's harsh conditions.
The capital and winemaking epicenter of Priorat is the capital, Falset.

THE ESSENTIALS / Spain's Priorat region flexes its muscles
Priorat's wines -- almost exclusively red, although there is an occasional white -- are blends made chiefly from indigenous Garnacha and Cariñena (Grenache and Carignan) grapes.
Priorat has been a place for wine since monks cultivated grapes in the Middle Ages -- the region takes its name from the Spanish word for "priory." As recently as 1900, there were 40,000 acres -- about the same area under vine as in Napa or Sonoma counties.
Priorat wines are intense and high in alcohol (regulations mandate a minimum 13.5 percent alcohol) because grapes ripen well -- sometimes too well -- under the Mediterranean sun.

It could have been in the dramatic mountains of Tuscany and in some ways the two are very similar, inhabited by that increasingly common breed, the 'cultural tourist', in search of history, beautiful countryside, great food and wine and an escape route from the hordes.
Priorat still has a long way to catch-up with Tuscany, but already the tell-tale signs are there; at least two famous names are moving here; French actor Gerard Depardieu is rumoured to have snapped up a large portion of land, as has Juan Manuel Serrat, the nearest thing Spain has to Bob Dylan.

The Catalans call it Priorat, most others in Spain say Priorato - however you choose to pronounce it, it's easy to see it has been an up-and-coming region for Spain, sparking envy among collectors.
This grape has lost favor in most parts of the world due to its rustic nature, but here in Priorat it's a welcome structural addition to the Garnacha based wines.
The red wines of Priorat are based on Garnacha, and produce inky wine with intense fruit flavors of flberry and plums, not to mention a required minimum of 13.5% alcohol.

Spotlight on Spain's Priorat wine region
Priorat is now one of the most happening wine regions in Spain, but one which fairly recently gone through huge transition.
Old-style Priorat had a reputation for being rough and massively alcoholic, but since the 1990s things have changed, and now the best wines from this region are some of Spain’s most sophisticated and sought-after reds.
Not terribly promising raw material, perhaps, but old vines of these varieties evidently have the ability to express the Priorat terroir in profound ways.

Wine Spectator | Articles | Making Priorat a Priority
The best examples of Spain's new exciting wines are coming from Priorat, a small region located 90 minutes southwest of Barcelona.
Settled by monks who brought their Grenache (called Garnacha in Spain) vines with them in the 11th and 12th centuries, the area has a long history of winemaking.
The group's members each agreed to purchase at least 7 acres of vineyard land, and they shared a common vinification facility for their first few vintages with the understanding that each would eventually build his own bodega.

Not Just Rioja: Wines from the Spanish region of Priorat are the new cult find - CHOW
The name Priorat comes from the Spanish word for “priory,” as it was monks who settled in the southern part of Catalonia, just west of Barcelona, 800 years ago after a young shepherd had a vision of angels descending on a heavenly ladder (the scala dei after which the monastery was named).
I visited the area two years ago, and though Priorat is just a couple of hours from Barcelona, when I drove over the low mountain range and down into the quiet valley, I felt as if I were going back in time.
Priorat went from being near-worthless plonk to a Spanish cult wine in the span of a few years.

In Priorat, the hillsides are often precipitously steep, so most are terraced (some terraces date to the Roman occupation) and covered with shards or even finer pieces of slate, which are scattered across the landscape like the broken remnants of a primeval world.
The maximum allowable yield according to Priorat DOC rules is about 2.7 tons of grapes per acre, but among the best producers, yields are often as low as two to four pounds per plant because of sparsely producing old vines.

Although wines in the Priorat have been produced for centuries, it is only recently, in the past decade or so, that these have taken a quantitative leap in quality that now puts them on the forefront of Spanish wines.
One of the advantages of the Priorat region is its temperate and dry climate with hardly any rain whatsoever during the summer months.
The geographical factor which affects both the price and taste of these wines is the fact that most vines are on steep slopes of slate of volcanic origin which confer a mineral character to the wines, and also preclude large automation of the picking process, thus making it a very manual affair.

The Priorat comarca, or county, is actually divided into two D.O.s, or denominación de orígenes: the more-renowned Priorat, which is a small knot in the center of the region; and the brand-new Montsant, created just a year ago, which forms a ring around its famous neighbor.
Priorat owes its name to the monastery; the leader of the monastery, called a prior, ruled over his territory (his priorato) with absolute control.

Located about an hour west of Barcelona, Priorat is situated in the Tarragona province, surrounded by the Montsant D.O., which almost completely encircles it to the north, west and south, and the Tarragona D.O. to the east.
In general, Priorat’s climate is warm and dry (average annual temperature is 15° C, average rainfall is 600 mm/year, average sunshine is 2,600 hours/year) moderated by a cooling influence of altitude (100 to 900 meters in elevation).
