When young he was a mariner with his uncle, Captain John Alden of Boston, and upon the death of the latter, in 1704, or about that year, he was in Dedham with his wife and his daughter, Alice, and in that town his son John was born.
Alden was married, by Rev. John Mattocks, in St. Paul, Minnesota, October 1, 1868, to Mary Langford Taylor, born in Westmoreland, Oneida county, New York, August 16, 1846.
Alden has become greatly interested in genealogical work, and has written a number of interesting and valuable genealogies and is still engaged in this class of work.

Henry Mills Alden, American writer and editor for 50 years of Harper's Magazine and descendent of John and Priscilla Alden of the Mayflower fame, was born in Mount Tabor, Vermont, on 3 November 1836.
Alden's literary career began while he was in the seminary with the acceptance of two articles by the Atlantic Monthly.
Alden then became assistant editor of Harper's Weekly, and in 1869, he was made editor of Harper's Magazine, a position he continued to fill until his death in 1919.

In 1634 John Alden was jailed in Boston for a fight at Kenebeck in Maine between members of the Plymouth Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
While Alden did not take part in the fight (which left one person dead) he was the highest ranking member the Massachuestts people could get their hands on, and it was only through the intervention of William Bradford that got him released.
John Alden's house in Duxbury, built in 1653, is open to the public as a museum.
