Priscus is an excellent and trustworthy historian, and his style is remarkably elegant and pure.
PRISCUS, ANCHA'RIUS, accused Caesius Cordus, proconsul of Crete, of the crimes of repe-tundae and majestas, in the reign of Tiberius, A. d.
This Priscus must have been a different person from the celebrated Helvidius Priscus mentioned below, since the latter did not obtain the qnaestorship till the reign of Nero, and the legates of the legions were usually chosen at that time from persons of higher rank in the state.

The Throne of the Caesars: Priscus Attalus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Priscus Attalus was a prominent Roman senator and it is probably this fact that saved him from a death that he so richly deserved.
Facing the prospect of mass starvation in the city, Attalus came to terms with Alaric and agreed to be placed on the throne as a rebel emperor in exchange for a promise of help from Alaric.
Athaulf raised Priscus Attalus to the purple a second time in A. 414, in what was probably a move to get Honorius to negotiate terms for the settlement of the Visigoths on Roman territory as federated troops.

The year 409 also saw the usurpation of Priscus Attalus, a senator supported by the King of the Vandals Alaric I, and the revolt of Gerontius and Maximus in Hispania.
To counter Priscus, Honorius tried to negotiate with Alaric, who withdrew his support for the imperial claimant in 410, but entered in Italy and sacked Rome.
Ataulf was forced by Constantius to move to Hispania, and Attalus, having lost again Visigoth support, was captured and deposed.

 Honorius
Occupying Portus Augusti, Alaric in AD 409 even set up a puppet emperor of his own, the prefect Priscus Attalus, who was confirmed by the Roman senate, terrified at having the barbarians so close to their capital.
But Attalus didn't last for long, soon being deposed again in AD 410 by Alaric.

He was an influential member of the Roman Senate at a time when the post had long become a ceremonial title bestowed on the wealthy and thoroughly devoid of any administrative or legal muscle.
There he settled in to give Honorius grief from the north end (and just to spite him made Priscus emperor again) but before he had a chance to walk into Italy a rival tribe picked a fight with him and forced him to abandon the invasion.
Meanwhile Priscus was captured and had to do some serious back pedaling in the court of Honorius who let him off, rather lightly by the then standards of punishment for treason, by having a couple fingers chopped off and exiled off to an island.

Honorius was also greatly strengthened by the arrival of six legions sent from Constantinople to his assistance by his nephew Theodosius II.
Alaric therefore cashiered his puppet emperor Attalus after eleven months of ineffectual rule, and once more tried to reopen negotiations with Honorius.
These negotiations would probably have succeeded but for the malign influence of another Goth, Sarus, the hereditary enemy of Alaric and his house.
