Prisoners of the Sun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prisoners of the Sun (Le Temple du Soleil) is one of a series of classic comic-strip albums, written and illustrated by Belgian writer and illustrator Hergé, featuring young reporter Tintin as a hero.
Prisoners of the Sun is the fourteenth in the series.
Prisoners of the Sun was the first Tintin adventure to be published in the newly-created Tintin Magazine in 1946.

 ‘Prisoners of the Sun’ (R)
Stephen Wallace's "Prisoners of the Sun" takes place in the wake of World War II on the tiny island of Ambon on the northern coast of Australia.
That the Japanese are guilty of the crimes is never in doubt, which is part of what makes "Prisoners of the Sun" a something less than riveting movie drama.
The film provides the day-to-day details of the trials, the denials by the Japanese officers, and the frustrations of the Australians who, because of the difficulty in finding living witnesses, are stymied in the face of Japanese stonewalling.

 ‘Prisoners of the Sun’ (R)
"Prisoners of the Sun" refers to 1,100 Australian soldiers captured in Southeast Asia by the Japanese during World War II.
"Sun" starts off as a reasonably diverting courtroom affair, with determined military prosecutor Bryan Brown up against a case that isn't quite as cut and dried as it seems.
"Sun" eventually concludes the Americans were Machiavellian, the Imperial Army was diabolical, the Australians were duped and the only good "Jap" was a Spielberg-sympathetic Christian who nobly gave himself up.

PRISONERS, including accused murderer Mark Galante, are being shuffled between police cells because of a shortage of prison beds, the New South Wales opposition said today.
"Prisoners are being driven from Gosford and beyond to Sydney police cells instead of being kept behind razor wire and prison walls," Opposition justice spokesman Andrew Humpherson said in a statement.
On one evening this week, there were 468 too few prison beds in the NSW system, Mr Humpherson said.

Based on accounts of Japanese atrocities during their wartime military occupation of Southeast Asia, PRISONERS OF THE SUN is a well-intentioned, intermittently powerful journey backward through a tragic period in history.
The court case that forms the basis of PRISONERS OF THE SUN concerns the fate of four missing airmen, presumed dead.
With fascinating, factual material to draw from, PRISONERS OF THE SUN should have been more riveting than it is. As a courtroom drama, the film is engrossing for the most part, but constantly undercuts its own momentum.

The relative absence of active and/or powerful female figures in The Prisoners of the Sun (1946) has not prevented this album from achieving international popularity, any more than the relative exclusion of significant male figures from the pages of Wonder Woman comics in the 1940's diminished the popularity of those comics.

Prisoners of the Sun: a supressed text in the Tintiniverse?
I subscribe firmly to the opinion, unlike those who protest that Tintin is not much of a reporter because he is rarely seen to report, that the books are in fact the result of his on-going journalism.
We know that these “reports” are available in the Tintiniverse (that version of reality in which the adventures occur), because the books crop up in the stories themselves.

It is about military trials that were held at the end of WWII on the island of Ambon, in Indonesia, to deal with mass atrocities that the Japanese committed against their prisoners.
There are some flash backs and a few other scenes with strong imagery and actions in it, but Prisoners of the Sun (originally entitled "Blood Oath" in Australia) is primarily a courtroom drama.
It not only shows a glimpse of just how degenerate the Imperial Japanese army was towards its prisoners, but it also shows how governments after the war just wanted to forget and move on quickly in their desire for strategic world building.

Halmoni and the Picnic offers a contrast between a new generation in a "new country" and an old generation from an "old country." Such a contrast requires adaptation and accommodation between generations and "countries" or worlds.
Compare the adaptations and accommodations proposed in Halmoni to those indicated in Hergé's Prisoners of the Sun, where an old world (Europe) and another old world (the land of the Incas) framed as the "New World" also require adaptations and accommodations for those who would reconcile their differences.
